it isnt the only problem. they also have "improved" the safety (of their business) by blocking chats from out of gmail when hangout is being used. So that now you can not chat from an xmpp server...

For bidirectional sync I prefer unison. If there exists any dist not having unison on their repos i dont know...
By the way, is it ok the version for you? I mean in debian jessie is still the 2.40...
