Thanks for the offer, but I'm only looking for a Jolla C because I do intend to actually use it as a phone. In case I find one, I'll use it as a stop gap phone (right now I'm still using the Jolla 1)...

And then people say Jolla's always adding more buttons and getting rid of swipes... The real problem is, at least to me, not whether or not they're using buttons or swipes, but that they aren't...

It has a browser engine that's at least somewhat usable and has the highest compatibility with applications and patches. There's really no good reason to install an older version on purpose.

Problem solved: for some reason, at some point, the systemd service for the TOHKBD was deleted. Reinstalling the TOHKBD ambience fixed it.

Is it just me or is the TOHKBD no longer working? I haven't used mine for some time so I don't know if this is a new thing or not. The keyboard doesn't get recognised when attached.

I doubt that at this point they do anything other than basic testing to make sure it at least boots on their Jolla-branded devices. There is no updated kernel, no updated Android compatibility layer,...
