literm -- terminal emulator

Though I'm not personally using Sailfish right now, some of the stuff I do still has meaning in that area. One such example is literm (https://github.com/rburchell/literm), a fork of fingerterm...

Re: Discussion over the Design, Features, and Rollout of Jolla's new Tablet, Assuming that it isn't a Figment of our Collective Imagination

I did a lot more on that when I had some spare time over summer. I should really get it into a demoable state someday :)

Re: First thoughts about the (pre) Sailfish OS 2.0

For a case study of this, consider Qt, which opened up to external contributions & maintainers in 2012, and now has approaching 30-40% of the contributions coming from outside of the "owner" of the...

Re: First thoughts about the (pre) Sailfish OS 2.0

Yes, it would.

If Jolla were to die tomorrow, the UI dies with it. Again. The same as has happened with the N900 and N9, to varying degrees. The same as has happened with various other consumer...

Re: First thoughts about the (pre) Sailfish OS 2.0

By not having Android support for a start, which chews up insane amounts of RAM ;)

On top of that, significant amounts of hard work, and some interesting smoke and mirrors tricks. I don't remember...

Re: QT5.6 (Dec15) to be Long Term Support - implications for Sailfish?

Fun factoid for historians who didn't bother to look it up themselves: the initial skeleton of the browser used QtWebkit :-)

Re: QT5.6 (Dec15) to be Long Term Support - implications for Sailfish?

Just because code stops being worked on doesn't mean it immediately "rusts" like metal would. It'll still compile and work the same way it did the last time (unless something changed underneath it)....

Re: How is btrfs meant to be used?

no, it was a conscious design decision. and maybe one that wasn't considered as much as it ought to have been, but well, hindsight makes things like that a lot easier :)

Re: QT5.6 (Dec15) to be Long Term Support - implications for Sailfish?

Browsers are a hard thing to compare because you're really not comparing application frameworks, you're comparing engines. In the case of the Jolla browser, you're comparing a small Qt-based UI shim...

Re: QT5.6 (Dec15) to be Long Term Support - implications for Sailfish?

You're right, but the "price" is paid at two different points. Waiting to upgrade means that the pain for that upgrade is delayed until someone decides to pay it (aside from the fairly insignificant...

Re: QT5.6 (Dec15) to be Long Term Support - implications for Sailfish?

I think I already covered this a few posts above you. It's not a trivial effort like you seem to assume it is, and the effort going onto that is effort that isn't spent elsewhere (other useful...

Re: QT5.6 (Dec15) to be Long Term Support - implications for Sailfish?

Never say never, but I don't see e.g. the immediate switch to a 3D interface coming one release after the initial introduction of the 3D library, for instance :)

Re: QT5.6 (Dec15) to be Long Term Support - implications for Sailfish?

The move from 5.1 to 5.2 was a big move. Large changes in the renderer, a totally new JavaScript engine, and a lot of other usual changes.

It took a team of people (let's say, ~2-4 people) some...

Re: SailfishOS Update11 discussions

Doing such theming globally means that if a "custom" build is desired (say, for a different manufacturer who wanted their own custom look), the whole thing can be done centrally, in one location.

Re: SailfishOS Update11 discussions

Because the update process is based on patterns, not packages. zypper dup works on packages, not patterns.

Re: SailfishOS Update11 discussions

That is the exact same way as OS updates function. Either you interrupted the process at the wrong point, or something else on your device was not in a good state.

Re: XWayland doable from user side or jolla required?

Qt 5.5 contains support for it, so it could be used. But I don't see much advantage taking it into use -- the current code is pretty simplistic.

It's also at the wrong layer: the compositor is...

Re: XWayland doable from user side or jolla required?

Ah, indeed, it looks like I was wrong.

But I would suspect that "the right thing", then, would be to look at whether or not the custom touch protocol can be ripped out in favor of wl_touch, and...

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

It does work, it's just not working at optimal efficiency. It says: "please give me a list of all my installed packages in the virtual repository", and then, locally, discards the ones that don't...

Re: Jolla User Experience Thread

While you may be right, package management systems don't work that way (and probably shouldn't, because aside from being slightly inefficient, you've got an information leakage!)

Right now, when...

Re: XWayland doable from user side or jolla required?

What's missing there? Is it expecting wl_touch to work? I thought that was working, but it's been a long time since I looked at that code.

Re: Advanced text entry on Sailfish (Swype or similar)

There's no longer anyone dedicated to working fulltime on the project (as far as I know). I think most of the work on it in recent times came from Jolla, actually :)

Re: Advanced text entry on Sailfish (Swype or similar)

I'd have to disagree with that.. I agree with you in that it has downsides, sure, but I can type way faster on an iOS device than I can on anything else of the same form factor because I can...
