I'd not go to say that far out. Programming is not exactly science but at least 80% science.
You don't know data structure, OS, compiler theories,... how do you program? Schools help you with that....

and I just got an email which said that the N900s are available again.

If you have downloaded it on the ubuntu box; then you have to copy it to your newly created ext3 partition on the N900. The command is run on the N900 not on the ubuntu box.

Is there a known linux host app for this toy (http://ardrone.parrot.com/parrot-ar-drone/en) yet?
It would be fun .... I am thinking to look into their API.

1G card is not enough.
If you had 512M each then your linux partition is as small as the internal flash (256M but compressed!)
You should have at least 4G and used : sfdisk -uM /dev/mmcblk0
-uM...
