The default Conversations support XMPP OOTB.
Encryption maybe a whole other issue but it should just work if you setup your Account and add your Contacts.
Maemo was never really designed to use...

A lot of the time it can take the pads with it, or have pad issues during replacement.
There are some good guides on this forum worth a look but not everyone feels competent to do it.

I haven't heard the best things about HMD devices maybe they were unlucky but earpiece issues occurred after a while on original and a replacement device. Search results seem to hint a few devices...

Messaging will go into portrait mode with just CSSU.
It's possible that may require "forcedrotation" to be on which you can read about in the CSSU wiki.
The IR can be used to transmit anything...
