Just tried the July 31st image on the sd card and got only red led glowing forever. So maybe current images are just broken?
Edit: Posted too fast :D After switching off and starting again it booted...

On PinePhone (not PinePhone Pro) it has been always possible - make a bootable uSD with Maemo Leste image and run it.
No tow-boot there by default.

Hmm... Have we not already heavily used with delays from F(x)tec? There is no base for expectations that there will be no significant delays with Pro1 X... :D

Usually it is the longer security and other updates period if you are lucky and your device has a LineageOS maintainer. E.g. Nexus 6 is from december 2014 but still supported. But if you have both...

Well, that was a very bad idea :D Installing SailfishOS after LineageOS resulted a non-booting SailfishOS.
I reverted my Pro1 to stock Android for the preparation for sale. But then the curiosity...

Followed the procedure carefully, got the TWRP installed, SailfishOS installation produced the same output. This time waited for more than 15 minutes....
