I've never used Google's SMS but I usually use my wife's SMS email to get ahold of her on my tablet:

I'm trying out Tear, but I've found that MicroB is at least as fast running the User Agent Switcher and set as an iPhone. It's easy to switch back if need be, and I don't mind iPhone optimized pages...
