There is an app "Navit" which will read unlocked Garmin maps. Sort of.
Worked for me with some topographic maps.


The Nokia Media Player plays realmedia streams, but not Windows media. Mplayer...

Idle, offline mode - 270 hours
Idle, WiFi on, power saving mode - 100 hours
GPS chip on - 11 hours
Idle, WiFi on, power saving mode OFF - 7 hours...

I bought a new aftermarket battery (couldn't find a Nokia one, and given that it failed, not sure I want to). Things seem normal now. I can't make it fail by wiggling the battery.

I was looking at the screen size issue in general. IMO the display size on a "pocket computer" such as the N8*0 can't usefully go beyond about 1024x700, otherwise either it won't fit in a vest pocket...

Not true! Programs can run off any volume that is not mounted...

Launching script from icon

I want to put a button on the tablet desktop that, when clicked, launches

I built the Maemo gpstracker demo and use that to turn the GPS on - it does clever stuff like restarting gpsd if it...

Accessing memory from PC:
(Not tried Windows just Linux but should work)
Install ssh-server on the tablet. Install e.g. wscp, PuTTY SSH client on Windows.
Use SSH copy to access the tablet...

Java is available from the jalimo project. However, when I tried it recently the J2ME support was not all there - so apps that "run on any cellular phone" probably won't work. Also somewhat slow IMO,...
