yes its possible to change the ball slider and the background are you saying the background image doesnt go with the theme and you want it changing?

trust me, im a noob too, it might not seem like it, but i had no clue about anything to do with this phone, i didnt even know what linux was, but i did what you did (this is all in the last month)...

/usr/share/themes/alpha/gtk-2.0 and you should see these 4 files double click the first (gtkrc) and a page will open up with a long list of all sorts you then need to...

you have to edit the file gtkrc in usr/share/themes/alpha/gtk-2.0
when you change it it changes other areas too, such as contacts colour, and desktop shortcut name colours and various other places.
