Not entirely correct - it is technically quiet possibly to control a helicopter without a "flight control system". People have been doing it with real radio control choppers for a long time...

Did you install sshd? I would think that even though the default user cannot login (hence the black screen) you should still be able to ssh in as root, since his path is not screwed, and fix it up.

Hmmm,

That might be a better solution than epoxy - expose the ground layer next to the UCB plug and run a bead of solder onto it and then the plug.
