What you describe is exactly how the phone would behave if you had the proximity sensor covered all the time.
Sounds to me like the proximity sensor has been damaged or bent out of alignment, or...

Which is why I have always steered clear of it.
I have always used a get_iplayer script to download vids to view at a later time.
I always concidered the live site to be to much of a pain to use...

It seems that on the expansys site (http://www.expansys.com/s.aspx?search=nokia n9) that only the 64Gb versions have been removed, you can still pre-order a 16Gb one.
Good rant though, couldn't...
