the power kernel is not only for overclocking, many features & patches were added & needed for other programs to work, e.g USB host mode
it will be best if you want to update the power kernel you...

what firmware is your N900? do you use tweak flash version?
this problem is known to be related with tweak flash version on PR 1.3

but, when i need to know the phone number being used by the person sending me the message i would just click the avatar of the contact from that...

apt-get upgrade
you will see lists of packages will be upgraded or held back...

but sometimes i'm using multitasking by opening several websites (2-3 websites), chatting on pidgin with 2 contacts at once, conky to keep an eye...
