So to answer the OP's question - you missed nothing. Maemo is still unfinished and nothing new for MeeGo, only promises and rumours.

It would be enough for Maemo 5 to support mobile java applications (microemu is really not enough). Guess we have to wait for MeeGo to start rolling. But without Solitaire... eh, can an OS be...
