I was having exactly the same issue a few days back. /home somehow became read-only. So what I did was using this (http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/N900/Using_Rescue_Initrd) to get into mass storage mode...

I always flash EMMC first (no -R), then take battery out, then rootfs.

So for your suggestion, I did this if I understand it correctly:
_flash combined (no -R)
_continue flash vanilla (no -R)...

So it didn't work for kernel v48. You can restore everything by reinstalling v48 (or just copy the file adp1653.ko back if you had backed it up). Anyway I use the latest v49 and it work great here.

A workaround is to Install the app "Live Focus". You can then choose to disable the red led.
