main reason to get rid of them (if you are really gonna be adamant about it) is to reduce swapping when you load various other apps, or even when a new call or SMS comes in. but aim for the big ones....

Maybe explore VLC on desktop and VLC or gstreamer on N900.
The N900 can play music from Internet radio servers, so maybe a set up similar to an Internet radio server may help too?
