The fastest way to do that I have found is through Search: Choose Phone (or Messages), then Search from Pulley menu -> start typing "Jo" and it gives you the matching contacts.

The copy paste works when you are writing something yourself. You just "paint" the text you want and that is copied to the clipboard. You can use the Paste icon (the one next to the suggested words)...

FWIW, I used my N9 with just one hand all the time, including typing. That is one of the reasons why I like/d it so much. Browsing in landscape mode was the only exception. Using Jolla with one hand...
