I believe that W7 advertises the shares through cifs & uPnp, on Ubuntu you shared folders are just advertised through cifs. You probably have to find or enable uPnp on your Ubuntu.

Sharing folders can be done in many ways. Windows 7 is sharing media files via UPnP which the N900 handles out of the box. On Ubuntu, folders are shared via either SMB or NFS, which are both...

I just tried it on three different programs and it worked fine for me, not sure why it's playing up for you though, maybe a reboot might help? I'm certainly no expert though....

yes, the bbc changed the site and the original method stopped working but the new one (see EDIT3 in my first post) works very well, even over 3g. confimed working by many now.
Have another try...
