I have been playing with chroot on the Pro¹ lately, extremely happy with it. Even my N900 never felt so close to an actual pocketable computer. I typed this post and uploaded images using the Pro¹.

If your kernel has support for it, you can try systemd-nspawn. Nspawn doesn't work with my old Nexus 4, so I can offer little advice.
