Yes, Backupmenu can do the backup (it will safe as a tar file, which you can actually untar and put back individual files also)

Sure... You have no reason to lose your data.
Best thing of course is if you already are running in open mode, then you do not need to do anything that would erase your current Harmattan...

What you describe is exactly how the phone would behave if you had the proximity sensor covered all the time.
Sounds to me like the proximity sensor has been damaged or bent out of alignment, or...

This sounds like the sensor that detects if screen is covered, like if it's in pocket etc, is broken. It's in the upper right corner of the bezel.
Seems like your n9 thinks your phone is in pocket...
