If you mean the place that shows up as your tablet's name when you're looking in filemanager that's under MyDocs.
So in fact, you could just do:
sudo gainroot
dpkg -i...

And still no errors when you run comix through terminal?
It may be worthwhile deleting your comix user-preferences.
In xterm type
ls -ald .comix
And you should expect something like
drwxr-xr-x...

The last time I had this problem, it was because I had tried to start it up as root and the files in .comix became unwritable by the normal user.

For this situation what about buying a compatible micro-SD card (careful that your camera accepts it) with SD adapter.

Does dmesg provide anything interesting of note when you plug in the camera? What might also be happening is that the camera is not behaving like a mass storage device over usb and instead using PTP...

If you enable the USB host mode on N810, and if you have suitable cable/adapter, you should be able to connect your camera directly to the N810 and read the files...

N810 takes Mini-SD. The N800 takes regular (full size) SD cards. So, the full size cards from N800 do not fit to N810.
If you have Micro-SD, you need to get a Micro-SD to Mini-SD adapter to use...
