Whilst I agree with the premise of your post I disagree with the whole dignity part. The OP has simply stated that he has lost faith in Nokia (which is a sentiment I can wholeheartedly agree with)...

My problem is I really like my n900 - from a technical aspect Nokia have done a great job and it also has a stable OS.

camera shutter has to be opened for it to appear. Hope this help.
Also do a reboot and try again after opened shutter.
