As long as you ONLY install applications from Nokia repositories (i.e. maemo.org), then you will be fine.

Generally speaking though the N900 does not need to be 'rooted' as it's open source...

Gemrb works great on my n900 with BG TotSC, BG2 SoA and ToB, Icewind Dale HoW and Planescape Torment. Controles are playable.

But cant run Icewind Dale 2 since it dosent support any less then...

There's one new unverified bug report that running it with the music player running (why?) locks up and a problem with defective N900s that lack up and down arrrow keys that has an easy workaround....
