The camera is quite capable at night, but you have to play with the ISO settings manually. Automatic ISO goes way to high in the dark and produces crappy pictures.

As someone else said this was more of an easter egg than a real feature. It's something to play with.
Ultimately, portrait mode even if it worked is mostly useless without an portrait app...
