one of the benefits of having a huge armel repo is that you also don't have to worry about dependencies much. you take the control file 1:1 and just rebuild what's missing, again not having...

Re: Fedora based MeeGo = NoGo!
Considering the policy has absolutely no bearing on the packaging format or it's parameters/features, what makes you think that ?

Re: Fedora based MeeGo = NoGo!
That's only half the story though. If it's a simple standalone package, yes it'll work. If it integrates with the system (ie. init, associations/mimetypes, icons, other package configs in /etc,...

Hey, it would eliminate all those pesky complaints about Nokia not releasing updates often enough. "So soon? I'm only 72% into my last emerge --update --deep world!"

Re: Fedora based MeeGo = NoGo!
I dunno about that. I'm sure there's independent deb distro's.. but they use the same basic tools.
That's what I don't get - Why does every "individual" project have to reinvent the wheel over...

Re: Fedora based MeeGo = NoGo!
Exactly, and all things equal, why change (rhetorical question, not directed at Rob1n) ? Moblin was also DEB until a little over a year ago, I don't believe Moblin devs forgot how to do DEBs. So they...

Re: Fedora based MeeGo = NoGo!
Except for as I said: Nearly anywhere you find DEB, you find APT. Not the case with RPM. So while I agree apt is a tool addon like Yum is an add-on to RPM.. Yum can't really be used to help the...

Fedora based MeeGo = NoGo?
UPDATE: according to MeeGo developers MeeGo is going to be a new independent distribution
which uses the RPM format for packages but which is incompatible to Fedora or OpenSUSE,
i.e. there is no...

Re: Maemo + Moblin = MeeGo
If it's going Fedora-based, RPM-based? Ditching the Debian origin? Oh yes, I'll be out of here then. There would be nothing left for me here, I moved _away_ from that kind of packaging and OS for a...

I'd used RPMs a long time ago, in Red Hat, but it was the equivalent of DLL hell in Windows. At that time, there seemed to be no central repository, so you had to manually hunt individually RPM...

If Nokia is smart it creates an N900 built of the first MeeGo images. Many enthousiasts among us will try it and give it a free beta test. That way they can polish things up for their first real...

Re: Maemo + Moblin = MeeGo
I was excited until I saw the move away from being a Debian based distribution. As a developer and Ubuntu user, I loved it. Now, I'm sad.
EDIT: I was also sad when Moblin made the switch.

Re: Maemo + Moblin = MeeGo
from http://meego.com/about/faq:
* Will MeeGo use .rpm or .deb as its packaging system?
* MeeGo will use the .rpm format
That's just too bad IMO. .rpm is inferior in every way to .deb.

The MeeGo API is based on Qt and Web Runtime (which sits on top of QtWebKit, which sits on top of Qt). This was/is exactly the API plan for Harmattan (no wonder since MeeGo is a result of merging...

That's fantastic news! :-)
Still digesting, however an obvious question is what's going to happen packaging-wise (what with Maemo being based on Debian and Moblin on Fedora).
