Do you have a ruby-dev package or something similar?

If so install that. If you chose pclinuxos for a reason, then I would stick with it - this is what linux is about, learning how it all works. ...

If you can't find a package for your distribution, you can try to install the sqlite3 bindings with gem as root:
gem install sqlite3-ruby

Are you sure that you've selected for 'Servertype' - SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol in the Site Manager of FileZilla client?

SSH/SFTP connects to port 22, FTP connects to port 21.

Why not just installing OpenSSH server, no need for MAD Developer overlay (unless you use MADDE). OpenSSH server also doesn't require extras-devel and extras-testing repos, so beginners are less...
