Seek doesnt directly work with Maemo.

The index is not so important for seeking when the file is local. Some players (e.g. mplayer with option --forceidx) can automatically build an index quickly in this case.
But for HTTP streaming...

A CIFS or SMB wouldn't work out of the box with the N900. I think the wizardmounter app has support for CIFS but I haven't tried this.

I've stated in the past that more than likely that the MeeGo Community Edition will invariably not come with the Adobe Flash player plugin due to licensing... just like OS2007HE and OS2008HE. ...

Guys, I contacted Adobe regarding Flash 10.1 support for the Nokia N900. The good news is that they confirmed Flash 10.1 is already ready and they have handed over the source code to Nokia.

It generally only does this when it detects new media on the device, because of a local file saving said media, or when you unmount the USB drive. Sometimes apps can trigger it by accident by...
