You did not do anything wrong. All of the other portrait support (settings, status menu, etc) you mentioned is provided by the CSSU. You would need to install the CSSU to get that functionality.

I tested it hours ago at school, and already pushed a new package to -devel.
Also, shutting down Skype solved stuttering in mplayer, watched a full episode of house without any problems :)
