It's a broken screen/damaged flex then. The touchscreen works right? Replacement N900 screens can be had on eBay for cheaps.

Be really careful with R&D mode.. A misstep could render your device to a permanent brick. It is also very possible that it wouldn't be covered by the guarantee. So try the least harmful things first...
