As said I remember it to be default behaviour.
But maybe some member usng it more frequently than pulling out of the drawer, charging and staring with love at it can say more.

N9 is a Linux terminal beast (if you wanted it to be).

I do not remember fully but this is what I hated on N9 and still do on "smart" phones. That the phone only showed what it thought it may show as 'documents'.
Did you try with txt, pdf or similar?...

need to install ibsms-utils0_0.5.17.3+0m7_armel.deb and
libsms-utils0_0.5.17.3+0m7_armel-mod.deb from here via...
