n9 washed in washing machine

Hi

is there a fix for n9 if it was washed i left it to drain for hours outdoor its was turned on when it was in the washer ,I tried the rice thing and left it to dry ,does it takes like 3-4 days to make sure its dead? i searched and found someone like me and it worked for him after a week I cant open it to remove the battery like other phones ,someone told me
Quote:

if the battery was left in it would cause the copper circuits to corrode and it won't be repairable "
any help would be great
thank you.

The service manual is here if you want to open it up and remove the battery:

I just cried a little on the inside... That breaks my heart to hear that, please be more careful with your precious next time.

Get it in a bag of rice in the airing cupboard as soon as you can, and if you can get the battery out too that's even better. Do not try and turn it on until you've dried it our for at least 3 days

Re: n9 washed in washing machine

it was turned on could it be dead cause it was turned on? or it doesn't matter and the battery could be used again? as i read that people who was able to turn their phones after the incident vibrate and then shutdown mine doesn't do anything at all!

I'm just speaking from general electronics/mobile phone advice - water won't really harm circuits unless there is a current flowing through them at the time. Rice is a desiccant and so draws the water out of the unit, hence why you don't even touch that power button until you KNOW it is dry! If it was on when it went in then it doesn't sound promising :(

As for specific N9/Meego advice, I don't really know, I'm new to N9s...I'm actually trying to get advice on flashing my (dead) N9 in another thread right now

When wetting any electronic equipment, remove all power source if possible (battery), put in a can with silica gel (better than rice, and not really expensive).
For 2 to 4 days. Don't try to turn it on before.

For you it's probably too late, but next time you'll know :(

Three tips to best recover wet electronics.
Submerge in rice or better still silica gel ASAP
Don't use direct heat (hairdrier etc), let it dry naturally.
Don't switch it on for as long as possible, it must be completely dry. (3> days) leave it a week if you want to be sure.

Good luck recovering your device.

ahmedk, did you try switching it ON? Is it working now?

I am sorry to hear that, I don't think it can be repairable, please, when you buy another phone, be careful with it.. Especially when it is an N9..

well i let dry for like 3 day in rice and I took it to Nokia care, after a day they told me it has 3rd degree liquid which cant be repaired .I should buy a new one and they could count my old one with like 100 egp (16 usd) reduced from the new one!

but others like my case may get lucky

for future drowning cases: i once learned to flush the water out of electronics by dipping it in pure denaturalized alcohol. It drives the water out of the device, preventing it from rusting in the long run. After that you should let it dry, like described above.
good luck...

no the screen is just like before, i didnt open it to see it ,but the phone took fast wash and it was dried from spinning only little drop of water was after i took it out but maybe because it was switched on and for 30 mins maybe there wasnt any chance to save it not like it was dropped in water and removed from it quickly

did it happen to you.?

Water and violence while the device was switched on, there wasn't really much hope TBH.

Precisely, dont let the water dry inside, it will ruin the device.
The white spots on the circuits below is what is left from letting the water dry.
This guy on the picture was lucky enough that the circuits was on the underside of the card , and that the water thanks to gravity dried on the plastics and not on the circuitboard.

To be precise, its not the water in itself who destroys electronics but the chemicals that are dissolved in the water.
... and there is plenty of those chemicals in a washingmachine.

Re: n9 washed in washing machine

Correct. Deionised water is a perfect insulator, IIRC (20Mohms/10mm).

It's safe to say the washing machine was hooked up to a tap water supply.
Even leaving out the detergent, this isn't a good insulator and as mentioned is full of minerals etc. which will leave residue.

If you were to try to remove water from a device with alcohol what would be the best way to go about it? I am imagining stripping it all down and using Q tips.

Stripping it all down and soaking it in plenty of alcohol is the best method, alcohol both keeps the residues dissolved and binds with the remaining water, wich will prevent it from getting caught under components and in other narrow places.

And most components on the circuitboard is alcoholresistant, since it is standard to wash circuitboards in alcohol directly after machinesoldering.
The most common alcohol used for cleaning is isopropanol or "technical alcohol" as it also is called, but denaturated ethanol would be okay too if that is the only thing that is close by.

Q-tip or toothbrushes is more something i would use when it already has dried once, but i dont really believe a cellphone is possible to save after the water has dried once, since it is so small components and circuittraces on it.

Re: n9 washed in washing machine

Thanks.
Iso-propyl Alcohol (for those that aren't sure were to buy it) is available in electronics stores.
It's also known as IPA (not Indian Pale Ale). :p
In the UK places like Maplin sell it.

Re: n9 washed in washing machine

yes bathe it in alcohol, then let it air dry, and blow dry it with medium heat for 20 minutes. if that doesn't work, you've done all you could
