No, but having one device ship in thousands and another in millions can easily influence priorities in both development, support and business terms.

If this is the case someone needs to be fired. You had four iterations of a device that is clearly selling better than expected every time. That is a bad management practice as far as I know. When you market things the way you did the N900 you create demand for those products so it would only be prudent of you to have those devices available for sale in an end-user usuable form. It amazes me that this has happened.

If you want to see why Maemo doesn't get the support it deserves in Nokia, you've only need to watch Anssi Vanjoki's (hour long) keynote from Nokia World last year where he spent about 2 minutes in an aside "announcing" the N900 in a "well, this thing sucks, but it's available" tone and the other 58 minutes telling us not to steal music and to buy the N97 mini.

Basically, the folks at the top of Nokia are dinosaurs who are having trouble changing with the times, and it's been holding Maemo back since 2005, and I fear it's going to continue holding MeeGo back now.

I enjoyed your post and agree with almost every word apart from the part Ive quoted. Our industry doesnt need any encouragement to become more ageist.

I know what you mean in a way but theres no reason you cant be both experienced and cutting edge.

That being said Im surprised, given your work here, that no interest has been shown. More fool them.

Yeah I glossed over that. I'm wondering if qole wasn't being sarcastic. He and many people here, self included, are well experienced in many areas and have no problem at the cutting edge.

I don't know if you're right or not, but there are plenty of plausible explanations for that. We know they didn't have enough N900's to sell at that point, and without features like MMS you really don't want the hype-following crowd to buy your device without doing any research. There's enough anger as it is.

Um... too late.

Yeah, but imagine what would've happened with a proper ad campaign and impassioned speeches by executives.

Now the N900 sells itself, and mostly to exactly the right people. Win/win.

Edit: except, of course, that more resources in 2008 would've made Maemo 5 more feature complete. But we don't know why that happened.

We're still talking Nokia, right?

A lot of people got into the N900 because (even now) it is the Nokia handset that has the most powerful hardware and the shiniest UI. People that didn't went further went it and bought it, with varying degrees of satisfaction, because it doesn't support many features Symbian users take for granted since a long time ago (and it even doesn't belong to the sector were Nokia makes a big % of their money). We have had the loudest complainers here.

From that perspective, I fully understand why did Anssi Vanjoki downplayed the N900 all he could. There is a big difference between holding back and the platform just not being there.

I'm sorry if I wrote that in such a way that made it sound like I was saying that you shouldn't hire people with experience -- quite the contrary! I think you take much more of a risk hiring people straight from school, because they're trained in all the buzzword technologies, but they have few or no demonstrated real skills yet. The real skills are the ones that always go in the second half of a job's qualifications, after they quote the things they think are important (what software / programming languages you know). You know, things like, "works well to a deadline with minimal supervision, quick learner, good problem solver..."

I think it is foolish to say, "We need [qt|gtk|c++|buzzword|linux] experts" rather than, "We need people who have shown (by their past experience) to be smart, quick learners, and enthusiastic about the product sector.
