Like I've already mentioned though, you asked for a communal discussion between like minded people and we're giving it to you. And no, it's not free speech. If insulting is against rules it's against rules on all mediums. What next, I can insult people via text files attached?

Frankly, IMO, we need this fixed because it is a nuissance. "Don't read it" is not an answer, because, frankly, I could tell you to go jump, and add a disclamer.

Disclamers don't excuse any behavior, as we all know. I understand that moderation here is hard already, but let (some of us) help.

I fully agree with you, except on the hard moderation part. We have plenty of popcorn threads just "popping" around, and while most of the bad-mouthing and pointless arguing stays limited to those threads, I've seem it occasionaly leak into productive threads, and no one seems to do anything.

I'm not sure if mods are simply trying to create space for such behaviour to vent itself out and die, or whether they're simply standing back.

I believe that allowing tags to be removed by others would work well, as well as letting common users trace tags back to their creators; maybe a tag history page would be ideal, for it would allow everyone to see who's adding and who's removing tags.

Personally, I believe having tags become traceable, alone, should curb most of the bad-mouthing in itself; people often shy away from badmouthing when they can't get away unscathed.

Finally, I agree with you that doing away with them altogether would be a loss; we should improve on the system, not do away with it simply because it's faulty.

It took two and a half pages of this off-topic discussion for you to realise that it was going off-topic. And you are as much to blame as the others for this, if you had ignored the posts against you it wouldn't have carried on, and if you want to respond you can do it privately as a PM, but if someone winds you up, the best thing to do is ignore it and move on, this is a lot easier to do online than some real life situations. This sort of off-topic arguing is far more disruptive than any tags. And back on topic, if you don't like them ignore them, I've never tagged any threads and they are so easy to ignore I can go through 10 pages of a thread and not notice a single tag.
