Device Y comes out. Suddenly, device X has mediocre capabilities! Does nothing you want! Is obsolete! The N900 did everything I wanted when I bought it. It didn't suddenly stop doing everything I wanted when the iPhone 4S came out. It still hasn't stopped doing everything I wanted today. And I will bet you, when the sun rises tomorrow morning, the N900 will still be doing everything I want. Yeah, it's sad that Nokia itself is slowly going under, and has stopped producing any successors to the N900. And yeah, it's nice that if you take an iPhone, hack up its OS sufficiently, and throw enough external keyboards and dongles and gee-gaws on to it, you can create a device that works sorta like an N900. But I see no reason to give up mine just yet. :) |

You don't need to remind me of all the things a N900 can do, I have mine sitting here right next to me. The point your missing is I have years of experience with the N900 and now I have months of experience with the iPhone 4S 5.1.1 jailbroken. You are missing the latter. I know exactly what I am talking about. It seems that you are the one who does not in regards to the iPhone. |

1. i havent tried chrome, it might have better web 2.0 support.
2. leaving bluetooth on ads a few mA to your current consumption. i live in cali too. use gloves at work. 4. cydia? i guess a jailbroken iphone 4s is a pretty good thing then. are there any downsides to jailbreaking? i feel silly saying "jailbreaking." does it ever crash or hang? does it affect battery life? i have never had the n9 hang or crash on me, stop working correctly is adifferent story. 5. jail broken feature again i suppose. i have always admired apple for doing their own asics for the iphone but besides your convincing arguments i could never buy an apple product again (ipod video was the last) because they are so smug at their "events" like that Southpark episode where all the Prius riders smell their own farts. They talk about we did this like noone ever done it. we put a phone in a iPod touch, its so great. we charge you an extra $100 for a 2 dolla part (16gb flash). we help at&t over charge you so they can in turn help us make a 70% margin minus NREs. It's actually possible to multiboot android on IOS devices. Not sure if it's more or less useable than Nitdroid. Though I don't really see the point in doing it other than proof of concept?
Dousan... e: here are some links about android on IPhone. How to install: http://m.lifehacker.com/5693309/how-...six-easy-steps And a wiki page where it seems to be mostly working on older iPhone models and even less useable than Nitdroid: http://www.idroidproject.org/wiki/Status |

it is not because Nokia threw away the future of mobile computing that Apple holds the solution. Looking at the whole iJailbreak story... I think part of iPhone ownership joy could be to detect and convince owners of non Jailbroaken iPhones to "get the best out of it" by jailbreaking and "revolt" against Apple's lock down policy. N900 users are never going to be that grateful when you show them the light. |

That's not the point. The point is that by today's standards the N900 is a lousy smartphone but a competent "computer". The iPhone is a great smartphone, and when it's freed, it can do some/most "computer" tasks the N900 can do. It may not be complete yet, but so far, getting a jailbroken iPhone can mean having the best of both worlds. |
Re: iPhone 4S (iOS 5.1.1): A look back at the N900
My laptop broke, the n900 has been my computer for the past 1 month, I find that despite...
brb, I torrented some flac encoded jazz albums but I did not see that the id3 tags were broken as they where bundled in an ARJ archive. Lemme just write a quick script that will fix those tags from the file/folder names so they appear nicely in my music list. Do not worry, I will leave this browser window open with this text in the quick reply box and finish up later... |

I was just saying to that guy that was loudly asserting that "no rational personal would ever need anything more than a detachable keyboard with another set of batteries" that his solution is much more crappy than he thinks it is. It will make you have to reach the charger much more often, both because of the additional set of batteries and because of the additional load on the iPhone itself. So the benefit of a built-in keyboard is still there for those who want it, despite his trolling. Please note that I use a N9 myself, which has no physical keyboard. And good point about BT 4. I think that's the first thing that has come in this entire thread where anyone found something that the iPhone can do the N900 cannot........... as long as you don't realize you can plug an off-the-shelf BT4 adaptor on the N900 via the USB port, if the need ever arose. Something you can't do on the iPhone: it has to be a special made adapter. And who is going to make iPhone-propietary hardware that only works with jailbroken iPhones? But the line has to be drawn somewhere (otherwise, as I have argued, both devices are Turing machines and thus capable of the exact same set of features). Quote:
And btw, I did run iOS applications on a N900... |
