Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Commsman: - re destination finding
Assuming you are using the OSM maps, and looks like you are, this is an issue with the way places happen to be tagged. I know it's a rubbish answer to say 'go fix the map data' but unfortunately a lot of the map data was inserted without much thought to routing/searching. I believe the way it works is effectively it builds a tree for search, Europe->uk->towns then any street within some arbitary threshold of a town is deemed to belong to that town. Personally I think the whole thing needs a much better, specific design. But it is what it is. In order for a town to show up in search it requries some tags that identify it as is_in Europe, is_in uk is_in county...etc To fix, get an account signed up with OSM, and go use the web editor to look at a node that you can find in search. and copy the tags. Or just look at Eastleigh (the town I mapped) it does now show up in searches, because I tagged it. OSM map data is fantastic, and part of that is people helping by adding useful information to give it that amazing level of detail. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Thanks for this - I suspected the answer was in the OSM maps. OSM is I agree amazing and I know I can get stuck in and contribute so will make a start as soon as I can - I can see some late nights ahead ;-)

Autozoom and other config options
Just a few of quick observations/questions in configuring Navit on the N800...
autozoom_active="1" seems to work, although autozoom_secs="n" does not seem to do anything. I was expecting to be able to temporarily zoom out and have the display zoom back to the autozoom level in force after n seconds, but instead the display zooms back instantly. Secondly, I cannot see a way to turn spoken instructions on or off via screen buttons. I have tried <osd type="button" x="632" y="516" command="speech.active" src="mybigmouth.png" /> and even <osd type="button" x="632" y="516" command="toogle_announcer" src="mybigmouth.png" /> Thirdly, the route selection on the N800 with an OSM map seems quirky or even amusing at times. I am guessing this is all down to the quality of the OSM map and cannot be tweaked inside Navit? Examples include instructions to turn right when the displayed map shows the correct route is to go straight on following a main road over a set of traffic lights, and the selection of silly small roads rather than prioritising major roads and motorways. Finally, are other graphics drivers available on the N800? sdl / qt_painter? I am guessing not. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I haven't been able to get the toggle announcer working right either. I haven't tried the auto zoom feature yet.
Inside the navit.xml file there is a section that has priorities for the different street levels. Currently, there are several sections based on vehicle type. Under the car section, you could try changing the priority levels: ie street_level_2 =30. The higher the number, the higher the routing priority. If you feel too many side streets are being used, you could try lowering the numbers for the lower level streets. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
In regards to auto-zoom there is currently no way to have it pause for a period of time. Basically what you see is what you get.
I think it would be nice to have Navit "learn" what zoom level to use at different speeds based off of what zoom level a user tends to zoom manually. When I used auto-zoom I definitely did like what it did but I did wish it would zoom out a little farther for highway speeds. I chatted with the guy that developed that auto-zoom feature on IRC a couple of days ago. He is no longer actively involved in Navit aside from monitoring the channel I believe. It didn't sound like he was interested in adding any new features either so if it's going to happen it will probably be someone else picking up the torch and carrying it. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
If you are using the internal gui (recommended over gtk) then the following page would be a good reference for you:

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Minor annoyance... Any way to make the oceans actually show up Blue???
Oh, I am using the OSM maps from http://downloads.cloudmade.com, if it makes a difference BTW.... Any way to change from Kilometers to Miles? |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
i can't configure the osd... i included <gui type="internal" />
<graphics type="gtk_drawing_area" /> in the xml, and some lines to configure the osd, but the osd is not showing... can someone may send me an working navit.xml with the internal gui by email? christian.jerusalem@gmail.com. changing the map-path and so is not a problem, but i cant get the osd to work... |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
A simple trick to get Navit to center on your maps... Assuming you have your map files correctly specified in Navit.xml...
Using the internal Gui, click anywhere on your blank screen. Go to Actions and then Town. Type in the name of a town that should appear within your map data. Click on the town name once it fully appears in the list. This will bring up a menu of things you can do with that location. Click "View on Map". You should be good to go... For more information you can check out the following wiki page: http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/OpenStreetMaps |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
i can't figure out how to configure the map file for navit.xml. how do i set it up and how can i set up the internal gui. the wiki site is not helping me. can you tell me what i need to do step by step after i install navit.
thanks |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I have added an example navit.xml and navitOSD.xml file to the wiki. Refer to the instructions on the link below. That should get you started.

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Just right click and select "save as". You don't want to view the file, you just want to save it. I will add a note in the wiki to reflect as such.
|
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
where do i save it and how do i make it view maps on navit?
i'm sorry i'm asking you so many questions but i just don't get it. thank you so much for all your help. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Okay, I updated the wiki with more step by step instructions. I hope that will clarify things for you. Let me know if it still doesn't make sense...

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Ok, dumb question of the day. How long until Navit is beta quality? I want to try to start using it soon.
|
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Navit is more then beta quality, at least from what I have experienced with the N810 so far. Navit is very stable and does not crash, the routing although not perfect is more then useful. The refresh speed of redrawing the maps is more then sufficient.
What there are some issues that hold it back a little at this time though. At this moment there is not a way to get english units displayed. If you are using OpenStreets Maps there is no support for house numbers (an issue with OSM and not Navit). Zooming out quite a ways will not necessarily show a nice world map but rather a bunch of dis-jointed lines. To modify most settings you have to edit the navit.xml file (can be difficult on the tablets). Finally routing can be somewhat flaky at times but note that this is usually because of the quality of OSM maps and not necessarily an issue with Navit. I would say that the biggest roadblock can be getting Navit installed and setup correctly. I use the SVN builds and update almost daily. So far all of the builds have been more then stable for use in the wild. I would actually recommend using the SVN builds instead of waiting for a "release". The wiki page for the tablets is being worked on every week. There is now a lot of good content that should be simple for most people to follow to get things running. Hopefully with the addition of the example navit.xml file that you can download can use it will also be simpler to have Navit work for the tablet right out of the box. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I did read all that good progress of this app and had enough curiosity to install it, and got it working... :) (I can see map and my position on the map, but I haven't tried the routing features yet.)
Just one question: Is there a way to force the display stay lit when moving/driving? |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I just added that section to the wiki as well. Although some patches have been proposed to accomplish this I believe there is a hold up on implementing them at this time. I believe gerritv has better knowledge of what the reason is.
In the mean time, it is best to change your display settings to stay lit while charging and to purchase a small car adapter to charge the tablet while in the car. You should probably do this anyway since the GPS tends to drain the batteries a lot quicker than normal. Note that some car adapters might be able to provide enough juice to run the tablet but not necessarily enought to charge the battery. If you are purchasing a charger make sure you purchase one that is able to provide the same amount of power as the wall charger that comes with the tablet. Since Nokia used one of their standard power jacks it is possible to by a car adapter for a cell phone that doesn't have enough power to charge the battery (don't ask how I found this one out...). The tablet will think it's being charged and thus the display will stay lit but it will take a VERY long time to charge the battery or it might not charge at all. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Adamis, that's what I'm talking about. It's got enough show stoppers or feature issues to keep it from being properly classified as beta. At the very least a menuing system for configuring settings needs to be added before I could consider it ready for any kind of "beta" classification, even if the system itself is nearly there quality wise. UI functionality AND configurability is part of the whole package, not a separate element to be gotten whenever someone feels like it.
As for a charger like what you're talking about, there is a trickle charger of sorts for the NIT, but I forget where I saw it. |

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
qwerty12: This is the link to the bug tracker, I'm afraid there isn't a detailed explanation of why the submitted patches were only partially applied.
http://trac.navit-project.org/ticket/282 Lord Raiden: I agree that not having a gui for changing settings can be quite detracting for people, especially those that are not used to the command line. In my experience though, once Navit is setup there is little to no reason to be modifying the config file. I haven't made any changes for a couple of weeks now and it's doubtful I will make some anytime soon. With the example navit.xml and navitOSD.xml files posted on the wiki (http://wiki.navit-project.org/index....t_on_n770/n800) it is now possible for someone to install Navit, copy the two files to their home directory, add map files to /media/mmc1/map directory and be good to go. It's not perfect but for my uses it is much more useful then Maemo Mapper which is very good in it's own right but will always be limited by it's map support. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Adamis: Good points. I just tend to think from a UI perspective, as well as "newb friendly" since I work with so many. And you'd be surprised how many will run from a manual config setup if they don't have some kind of gui to walk them through the process. So my thoughts were more in that direction. I for one could care less, as I've been doing manual config hacking since the CLI *WAS* the UI and changes were done via VI. However, I'm not complaining about this on my behalf. I'm looking at things in the larger picture, and thus focusing on what others will need if this is to have any chance of becoming mainstream, which I think it should.

Navit after reinstall do not load the default map!
Hi!
I had tested edited navit.xml file and a downloaded bin maps from Planet Extraction. But the Navit either do not had started, or started without map (the map list in the menue was not present). To avoid the sh*t access violation by saving the changed navit.xml i have changed the access permissions for this file to 777. Not the right way, i know! (ssh root@localhost -> root passwd -> chmod 777 /path/navit.xml). Because with the changed (and later original file too!) navit.xml i had no map access ... ... so i had removed the Navit application under App.manager and installed it again. But after new installation i still do not have the map!!! The loaded default test map is in the map list in the Navit menue now, but even if i select it or not, nothing changes! Now the Navit starts always with empty yellow surface only, all icons are present, the map is selected in the list - but no map will be realy loaded! I have 3 times removed and again installed Navit directly from internet install like before, but i cannot see the default test map! What is wrong please? Thank you, Feri |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
ferika: I'm not sure I follow exactly what the issue you are having is. The Navit.xml file that is on the wiki is not set to use the sample map. It is set to look for a map file in "/media/mmc1/map". Place whatever map file you have in that location.
Note that if you are using map data for just your state or country Navit will not have data to draw a world map from. You would need a world map from OSM to do that but note that performance can take a hit and it comes in at 2+GB. Now... When you start Navit for the first time it doesn't know where it is and where it should center the map. If you are using the sample navit.xml file the default position that Navit is going to go to will be Las Vegas Nevada. If you don't have map data then you will be staring at a beige screen. IF your map file is indeed loaded correctly then you can either wait for a GPS signal lock at which point Navit should center to your location and you should see your map data. This assumes that the map file you are using has data for the location you are getting a GPS position. The other option is to do a search for a city known to be within the map data you are using. This is spelled out in the wiki page so refer to it if you don't know how to do it already. I hope that puts you on the right track. |
After reinstall will not recognize the default map
Thank you, i have tested it and after i was logged in with GPS-Mouse, i have with zoom out reached a wery little map on the disply border. After center it and zoom in i have the default map again.
--- The navit was installed from this site: http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/navit/ Thank you, Feri |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
PS:
It is a problem, i f i try to change the access rights for the navit.xml file??? I will be set it for the tests only to 777, because the access violation by savig this file after i has been made the changes comming always up. PS2: It is a problem. if i try in the section for openstreetmaps: ... data="/media/mmc1/map/*.bin"/> ??? If i try this, my navit will no more start! Depend the starttime from volume of the map(s)??? Or will be the map loaded after i have activated it in the list? PS3: It will be a VERY NICE FEATURE of navit: ... If the actualy position points outside of active map location, that navit automaticaly does correct the actualy position to approx. middle of this map. (And may be, correct the zoom ratio too.) This may solve those problems like a had finaly. Thank you, Feri |
Latest test - my edit of navit.xml
I will be test, if i can move the original map to external (mmc1) card and if it works!
- So, i have been chaged the access permissions of navit.xml to 777. - then have edited with PyGTKEditor the file navit.xml in this way (in the sample map section): <mapset enabled="yes"> <xi:include href="/media/mmc1/map/*.xml"/> </mapset> - then, i have copied the original files to this location on the mmc1 card. - i had changed the osm_bbox_11.33,47.9,11.7,48.2.xml file in this manner: <map type="binfile" enabled="yes" data="/media/mmc1/map/osm_bbox_11.3,47.9,11.7,48.2.bin"/> - so, all saved, navit started again and as result: NO MAP WAS LOADING !!! The menuepoint MAP in the navit menue was not present!!! Whats wrong pls??? Thank you, Feri |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I just have a file called map.xml, which I point to in the xi:include line. Then I call my maps from there.
Try changing to: <xi:include href="/media/mmc1/map/map.xml"/> and rename your osm.....xml file to map.xml it should work. You can call multiple maps from a singe file. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Tahnx, very much! I will be test it!
--- But in this time, i have in navit.xml and osm_bbox_11.33,47.9,11.7,48.2.xml changed the path in this way: ="/usr/share/navit/maps/*.xml" ... and it works with the original test map again. It seems, as on my external card does the map not work. Yes, now i go test it again - with you settings. Thanx, Feri |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
YESS!
It works, so like you told: <xi:include href="/media/mmc1/map/map.xml"/> AND: MEA CULPA, that i had more xml files in this map directory - the the navit could not start, because many of the xml files have entries for not valid or not existent map files! Try to have only valid entries - than it works. Ok, i will test other map file now, and as finale multiple files! QUESTION: How long will start the navit with mapfile about 100MB ??? Is it the file length they make problems for me, or the mapfiles, they i had loaded before are not able to work with navit? Have you good source for maps? The latest i have loaded from Planet Ectraction, but do not work!!! Navit will not start with those maps! Thanx, Feri |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
ferika: Try using this link to download the map area that you want. This is setup to extract OSM maps for Navit.
http://maps.navit-project.org/download/ You will then have to modify your navit.xml for the new map file name. |
Success with the map, but...
Ok, i loaded the whole map of Europe from the link in the Navit Wiki. One problem - if i try to ZoomOut, then after 3-4 steps i see not map, but short lines, and undefinable very lettle objects only. Cannot navigate from one country to the other, because nothing identificable is to see. Only if i try to zoom near details, then i become right sight on the map.
Thank you, Feri |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I asked the developer of Navit your question. His response was that Navit currently only uses one map resolution level. Zooming out can get very CPU taxing because of the amount of detail that needs to be drawn so stuff gets cut out from being drawn.
The solution will be to implement an overview map that is still vector based but have much less detail. To quote the developer: For example, if the boundary of usa consists of say 50000 nodes in the detail map, it will be reduced to for example 1000 nodes for the overview map Currently he is working on fixing making the oceans appear blue which is a prerequisite to the overview map. Once he finishes the blue ocean part he will start working on the overview map. He is hopeful that he can address these items within a couple of weeks but there is no guarantee. If you have some programing skills though you could always offer to help... |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Thanks!
But - how does this the built-in map application of OS2008 ??? If i try to load the whole east Europe (apr. 130 MB - ex. Yugoslavia, Baltic and so far are poor), or Alps, then the zoom comes quick enough. Have this maps more submaps for each resolution, or may be, taht each element have as parameter a limit zoom factor ? Over this zoom factor will be then this element not displayed? And can be set up for each element separately. May be a solution for Navit maps too? Thank you, Feri |
