Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
I'm sure that the N900 is the right device for me, and I'm not going to decide that I want an iPhone. I suppose that in the end, it's just interesting to know that it's about the same price to order it from mobilecityonline (US$629) or expansys.ca (CAN$799). Of course, I ordered with the priority shipping for an extra $25, so perhaps that might cut things down for future buyers.

Just in case there are any people from Calgary, Omegacell seems to have a good reputation and they are selling the N900 for 775.00 plus GST

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
My N900 has arrived, and I also paid taxes on it. The taxes came to CDN$97.26. When the credit card charges show up, I'll post a final total price, including everything, in CDN$.

I don't like it because I thought I was upgrading from a e71. Turns out the half-baked OS and the lack of apps makes this a downgrade, not an upgrade. (http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=438257&postcount=6) + no long key press; slow e-mail, unfirendly music player, ...I think I'll get an e72 if I want to upgrade. Up to $150 off because that I believe that is a fair price to pay for having tried out the phone. However, I may get offers well above the $650, so I may not lose much. |

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
Got my credit card charge from mobilecityonline. The US$689.94 was charged as CDN$750.37. Then there was $97.26 duties/taxes on top of that. So ordering from mobilecityonline ends up costing just under CDN$850 for the N900 (with priority shipping). Without the more expensive shipping, it would likely be about CDN$825, which is pretty much exactly what it likely costs to go with expansys.ca.

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
I have had my N900 for close to three weeks but had no carrier service on the device so far. I have been using Wi-fi exclusively in combination with Skype.
The dilemma: I don't have a phone number and need to get one ASAP. I know I have a lot of options right now. Just wondering if anybody has tried Fido, Rogers and WIND and can provide a comparison of all three. Please enlighten us. And what are guys talking about the Unlimited Browsing. Does that provide the same service as a data plan?? So confused! Help me! haha Quote:

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
Got a new number! All I can say is "Gone with Wind"
If you plan to go with Wind, don't go to Blockbuster stores for now...go to an actual WIND store because blockbuster locations don't have Sim cards yet. Quote:

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
Update on WIND:
Able to receive 3.5G SIM wasn't configured with the Access Point Name and WIND guys couldn't figure out what the problem was. Anyways, when you buy a SIM, you have to add "internet.windmobile.ca" in Access Point Name And I had to call WIND so they can setup Data on my phone... because it only works for 1/2 hour the first time. Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
i've been going wifi waiting for a data plan
i just talked to a guy at wind and you need to get the minimum voice plan ($15) and then you can get unlimited data plan ($35). he did say that the n900 wasn't supported on their network. i believe he's wrong based on specs, but can someone confirm? i don't want a voice plan at all, just data. anymore input from people who have plans would be great. |
Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
My phone arrived yesterday. I paid CAD $582 for it (ordered from Amazon on Dec 21, 2009). It includes a cost of American mailing address, shipment by USPS, $5 customs and $25 GST. Amazon refunded me US $50, since I don't qualify for Nokia rebate.

You can PM me if you need some assistance, Edit-the few that I have tried to help configure the goam apn on rogers could not get it working. Since I am not a rogers customer anymore, I will not be able to assist in setting this up, sorry! |
Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
The N900 will work with WIND. I am planning to switch early in the new year after they sort out some of their initial reliability issues.
I believe that you can get a USB stick data plan, and use that SIM card in the N900. But with WIND, that is $55/mo. You are better off getting the $15 voice + $35 data plan. (Smart pricing on their part - grrr) |
Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
if you go with the 15 dollar voice plan and 35 bucks data can you use skype right?
|
Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
'cause if so ...unlimited NA calling is $3/month.
This service provider below can give you a local number for incoming calls for another $3/month. http://www.abadss.com/forum/1070-voi...-how-have.html So theoretically you could have unlimited calling and data for 56 dollars... |
Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
Clubberlang: Who are you talking about, exactly? The didww.com service is $5/mo + $5 setup fee. I've considered using them, and if 3G Skype / SIP through Wind is of acceptable quality, I'd be very tempted to use them along with Google Voice (DialCentral)...

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
any other places selling the n900 in canada guys???
ca-united.com ships here but costs around 750...local sn trader sells it for 749....any other places selling it for cheaper..... |
Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
NewEgg Canada has it back on their page.
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...05178&Tpk=n900 $649 - $50 w/ free S&H + taxes = $676 to your door. Helluvalot cheaper than EVERYWHERE else. |
Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
i ordered through them..cheapest around for us :)

Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
I got my N900 just before new years. I'm with Fido. I get 2.5G on it. So wifi is my way. I got it almost everywhere I go. WIND, which you guys are talking about is out of my area. I'm just out of their coverage. I'm in RichmondHill but north of Elgin mills Rd.
But Dave's communications will be launching in a month or so and they will be the first to have 3.5G for the N900. I'll wait and see. The data plans are rediculasly expensive for now. $30/500kb is crap. They will catch you for 3 years and give you 6MB for the same price. But no contracts for me...I've learned my lesson before. |
Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
We assume you mean $30/500MB and 6GB, respectively.
My plan with Rogers is just too good to give up for the next coming years, until WIND has FULL coverage to the areas I frequent. I'll be using EDGE/GSM on the N900 for quite some time to come. FREE BUMP FOR NEWEGG DEAL BEFORE IT GETS TAKEN DOWN. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...05178&Tpk=n900 |
Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
Sounds like N900 will be officially supported on wind mobile soon:
http://www.windmobile.ca/community/W...s-useful-info/ Too bad I don't live in Toronto. I just have to wait until Wind comes to my neck of the woods. :) |

Has anyone had any success connecting to their Google Talk (chat) account on the Wind network? I can surf the web fine and connect to my Skype account, but I get a network error trying to connect to Google Talk.
|
Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
I need to know! What does Skype sound like over Wind 3G?
EDIT: Interesting about SIP and GTalk not connecting. Are they blocking SIP on 3G?!? |
Re: N900 in Canada (Toronto)
I used Skype on Wi-Fi, as my Wind plan is voice only. The quality of sound was great (called relatives in Eastern Europe who also have a Skype account).

It appears that they are working to resolve this. How hard can it be to open a few ports on a router or within iptables? I believe that this is further reaching though. If you look at their usb stick data plan - it is $55. The unlimited phone version is $35. I think they intended a service difference between the two, and did not take into account that people would be using a lot of ports/services on their phones. Now they are probably trying to rework these data plans. Crazy. I wonder if DAVE wireless will have a better start than WIND. Once they get this all resolved, I am switching. Coverage seems pretty good in the areas that I frequent. Once I get it switched (later this month maybe) - I will put up a detailed review. |
