As the application is free anyway, why not upload it to Extras-Devel / Extras-Testing? It offers a way to upload binary-only packages, no source code required.

Create a playlist with name....then go to that playlist and it will have an option to add songs.

I'm probably missing something obvious (!), but how does one create the playlist in the first place...?

Go to "Library" and then "Playlists" and tap the black bar on top and it'll let you "add playlist."

Hey Peter, don't mean to be a bother ( i know how hard you guys have been working on this) but can you give us a reasonable time frame as to when the latest update will be ready?

Thanks

So what is the reason this application is not in extras-devel yet? Binary-only apps are welcome too.

There is no reason :) We simply haven't investigated the repo, how to upload to it and what the reqs are ;). We'll look into it soon. ~ PB

I'm really hoping for tomorrow. Our goal is to get the scrolling issues fixed asap. We've completely isolated the problem and we have an untested fix as of this afternoon. If tomorrow we find that it doesn't crash, delete songs :P or turn your phone against you we'll post it here and submit it to ovi.

We share your frustration. Technologically, this would take us all of 5 minutes. The hard part is all UI. If you have ideas, please share them :) We want this feature, too!

Couldn't a long keypress on the album cover be used to automatically add something to a preset favorites playlist? A long press within track listings could possibly give the option of adding a track to the currently playing playlist.

While you're here... any chance of some kind of crossfade/mixing feature being added? It really does add something to mixes.

Crossfade and gapless will come down the line.

In the mean time how do you propose the user selects the playlist to which a song is appended? What if the user wants to add the song to a different playlist? Give me the whole work flow :) I think it's a tough challenge but I also think that we'll find a good solution. And if you guys keep the good ideas coming we'll get there that much faster :D

Peter thanks for the nice app hope to see new version soon ;)

Also a feature request :)
It would be amazing if you guys implement some sort of mood selector, while instinctive shuffle is a great thing i would love to have the ability able to create playlists based on my mood :D

The best handling of playlists I have seen is on Rockbox - their manual explains it beautifully so I'll just link to the appropriate section.

Many thanks for the work on this - I was decorating today and Instinctiv was playing some excellent mixes that made painting ceilings seem almost fun.

Why wouldn't a rather standard menu implementation not work? Hold down for menu, and have add, remove etc. Fluent UI is great but sooner or later features are going to grow beyong simplicity itself and you will have to split into minimalist and advanced UI IMO.

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

People seem to like the "left/right swipe" idea when playing a track to access functions (I certainly do) - could this not also trigger an "Add to Playlist" option, then select from existing / create new...?

Just an idea...

I generally agree... the goal always is to pack as much functionality into as simple a UI as you can. The 747 cockpit is a last resort :) -- and we're not giving up yet. If we don't come up with anything simple, we'll probably do something like you or hellnick suggested. That said if there's an intelligent way of solving this that looks simple to the user, that'd also be pretty ideal. In other words, if you had a full time butler who did nothing but manage your n900 what could he do for you to make this simpler? Would he know which playlist you wanted to add the song to? Perhaps an even more important question is would you even need this functionality -- could it be replaced by something better, smarter, more powerful and still easier to use?

A gesture (like you mentioned), or press and hold for a menu or somesuch is *probably* going to be the way we go -- at least in the short term.

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

Problem with swipes is that you need to carry a manual and, eventually, you will do something bad by accident.

How about power wheel interface? It would be swipe-like.

Hold thumb in center of - say - artwork. After 1 second, a power wheel pops up (round menu, with 8 buttons, N, S, E, W, NE, etc). Each would be large enough to have a big icon and a small text underneath that one only needs to read once.

For example, buttons could be:
Left: delete from current playlist
Right: add to playlist ... (pops up list of playlists)
Top: Edit artwork
Bottom: Cancel

Then add more as needed to the said wheel. It's menu-like, but can be operated by thumb. Say, bottom left and right could be next and previous song or something (though they already have buttons).

You could have the wheel be hold-and-release or push-select, like menus are on your average desktop (I'm on Windows, so, disclaimer).

--

Another idea is to reserve a swipe for a menu. For example, swipe down pulls the menu as if another window is above it, a la fcamera. Mighty useful and intuitive. It could be the same feel as the rest of the player has, with big menu bars and nice icons. Add to playlist, delete from playlist, etc. Swiping up would pull another window from below, that could be the current playlist, to jump songs.

Some work would be involved, but I believe this to be a great UI approach. You could tuck the artwork window to the left and so on.

I think I like that idea a lot more than the power wheel (most because I have a strong preference for rectilinear UIs that won't have icky aliasing issues). We'll throw some mockups together and post them on here for feedback.

We've decided against open sourcing the project for the time being. The code base is still rapidly maturing and evolving, not by accretion but often times by redesign. We're just not ready to begin accepting patches (or criticism ;)) just yet. We'll revisit this question down the line.

I do like the fcamera UI of swiping up and down left and right to access menus. BUT...do we REALLY need that many menus?? This app as it is...is very slick and intuitive to use. Unless there are more hidden functions that you want to implement which require a whole set of menus for them...then sure. But as of now...swiping the art to change art and music with a tap or click of "play" button will suffice. As for adding random songs to playlist...you can create where tapping and hold for a menu to appear and select "add to playlist" will be just fine. As for other options like "fullscreen" or "landscape mode only," that can be added to the top black bar with an option for "option settings."

The swiping should only be used to change the BIG art and music. The whole reason you want to implement the fcamera UI is for easy access the menus by swiping left right up and down.....right? Well, it doesn't make sense because these menus are ALREASY EASY TO ACCESS. Are you talking about accessing album? Artist? Playlist A and B? Well....buttons are right on top...pretty easy to access..just tap on it?? Why do you need a whole set of menu of swiping??

The latest update is very stable and very usable. Would love to see this in the next update

- Instinctiv doesn't work in silent mode
- option to choose album under artist category
- volume control doesn't work while the screen is locked
- when you go back out from a list (song, artist, album) it goes back to the top of the list instead of going back to the previous location

Thanks to all the developers of instinctiv

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

Great application, just a couple of things I noticed with the latest deb file

1) CPU usage is pretty high

2) I have 3300 tracks on my n900 however when I go to shuffle and click play songs similar to it just shows just 5 tracks. What do I need to do to make instinctive see my entire library in shuffle mode?

3) I have a similar issue with the instinctive shuffle, somehow it only shuffles through a small subset of of tracks - 5 to 10 of them...

4) Scrolling through tracks and/or artists is smooth however if you have 3000+ tracks it is a pain to always have to scroll through all the tracks to get to the ones later in the alphabet - would it be possible to implement an index at the left or right hand side which would let you jump straight to tracks/artists/albums starting with that letter. Similar to the N900 phone book when running in portrait mode

The song lookup is a great feature, I havent had a chance to test this yet but it is great to finally have this feature!

Thank you for all your hard work, this truly has potential to be a great application.

Hello to all,

is it just me or am I just stupid?
I can not find any possibility to search for a Album or anything with keyboard or on the screen just scrolling, which is a pain in the *** if you have 431 Albums on your device like me lol
And unfortunatly Bluetooth Headset control still not working :(

Sorry if Im just stupid.
Btw using latest Version postet from peter one page earlier from yesterday :)

Hello,

i have the same issues that jer006 (point 2 and 3), and i would reallu like a random mode when you play all the songs of an artist or when you play a list of 1000 songs for example, and want to play it in random mode! I would love that!

BTW it's a great app, continue the good work! and Thank you very much!

Hi Peter,

This is a great application and I am glad to see it improving every day. I created some quick mockups for a possible playlist implementation (see attached files).

Hope you find this useful.

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

I took instictive to the gym today so i have some insights :) "
i have 2500 songs on my n900.

1. CPU usage seems to be quite high, sometimes 100% and its been like this for all my time at the gym, also i had to kill trackerd myself.
2. headset wired play/pause daemon works.
3. unplugging and pausing daemon doesnt work.
4.I didnt like the playlist that instinctive built me on 'Come Clarity' By In Flames. I have loads of metal songs but it often went to my blues or country selection for no reason(eric clapton while running?! plz).
5.My n900 didnt pause for the time i had a call,so i missed it, dont know if it because it lagged so much to pause and start the ringtone or because he just doesnt stop when having a call at the moment.
6.n900 stutters and caughs alot when trying to unlock the screen and do other thing with it(again, could be due to high CPU usage)

Thats It! :)
I really love the UI, snappy and intuitive.
Also i have a request, PLEASE make a widget for it on the desktop. I just got used to it by now.
Also suggestions: In the upper panel put icons for songs(a note),artists(a person),albums(an album) and playlist(a list?) and in the middle a bigger Back or "Back to main menu" button.

Overall i really like what is going on, Keep It Up! :)

Yeah, CPU usage is still a bit high for me too. I have to push the switch button or power button twice to unlock the screen. Also all the shuffle options repeat tracks very often (have 1800 tracks and in 50 minutes of listening, "Dazed and Confused" of Led Zeppelin was repeated for 3 times!) :D
By the way, what about the idea of add an equalizer? is doable?

Re: Ovi Store - Instinctiv

I just made an account in this site an this will be my first post :)

I've been using instinctiv for the past few days and I must say that it's an amazing player and by far the best looking one I've seen for mobile devices.

With a few adjustments (probably already on the way) it will be the become the best player on the n900.

Since the player is still in development I would like to say what I would like in the final version
(would make it my default player)
1. A scrolling bar that shows the letters when browsing the songs, albums or artists.
2. The ability to activate instinctiv shuffle and random shuffle from the now playing screen as with the default player
(would be cool to have)
3. Crossfading
4. Working headphone daemons
5. Ability to edit song info from the player, like the name or album

Anyways, great work hoping to see the next update soon.
