So I should ask for a English variant that has German on it as well (considering that German is more used than Dutch throughout the world)?

You are talking to me as if there isn't an azerty and a qwertz keyboards there. I am just asking for adding symbols to qwerty, a totally different configuration as with french and german ones is not needed. I can't write on spanish with that qwerty keyboard, some of these symbols are used quite much. I can't even write the name of my country "España" or may language "Español". Maybe, modifyng the software layout to include the symbols and remembering where are them could be a dirty solution.

While Jolla doesn't reach to latinoamérica sure, spanish population is 47 million, less than french (66 million) and german (80 million).
¿Wich countries with French or German as native language is Jolla available in apart from France and Germany?

As mentioned before, you will be able to specify your unique layout and if enough people want it we will make it. If not we will supply all files to modify your qwerty keypad at your local laser-shop to your preferences. Software will be completely configurable.

We cannot do more without increasing costs for others.

Re: TOHKBD rev2

Ok, I couldn't find an answer to this question in the FAQ (unless maybe you see the answer as included in "ready for day-to-day use"?) or any of the posts containing the word "software", or maybe I overlooked something. It does seem funny to me if noone would have asked this before, but here goes:

- Will the on-screen keyboard remain hidden when TOHKBD is attached and open/slid out? We get to see the complete screen while the cursor is in a text field? Vkb will not pop up when (re-)positioning the cursor inside a text field by touching the display? etc (other events that normally make the vkb appear).
-Does the opposite apply while TOHKBD is attached, but closed?
- All Sailfish apps or only stock Jolla apps?
Android experience?
Apologies if an answer has been given already, will appreciate very much a pointer to it!

@malkavian: I can write "España" fine even on this QWERTY keyboard from my hybrid laptop which has US International with Euro on 5 layout.

"¿Wich countries with French or German as native language is Jolla available in apart from France and Germany?"

Jolla is available in:

German as native language: Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium (yes, there's a portion of Belgium where German is the official native language), Liechtenstein, South Tyrol and soon also Namibia (just like Belgium, there's a portion where German is the main language).
French as native language: France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Monaco and Belgium.

keyboard extended = virtual keyboard minimized (that is logical)
virtual keyboard is minimized = you see the complete screen (also, logical)

the vkb is not completely gone, but we have a completely bare-bone version that only shows the spacebar. you do not loose the option to open another version of the vkb by longpress, while still minimizing the vkb space. so the vkb is not gone, it is just very very very small.

tohkbd closed = the same as detached. normal use, normal vkb.

this is not our department, but jolla's. all native apps will work fine, jolla is increasingly improving experience between native and android environment.

Are you saying there is no way the virtual keyboard can be hidden?

Because I am trying the "bare-bone" version and when you copy a text (which is something quite common and something that can be done solely via ctrl+c & ctrl+v on the keyboard), an additional row appears. With this additional row, my rough estimate is that the keyboard takes ~28% of the screen when in landscape. I don't think that is really tolerable if you want a good HW keyboard experience.

EDIT: I know this is probably up to Jolla to resolve, but I'm just saying that the "bare-bone" virtual keyboard solution is far from ideal.

"Vkb will not pop up when (re-)positioning the cursor inside a text field by touching the display?"

Counter question: why would you (re-)position the cursor on-screen? That kinda kills the purpose of having a keypad on TOHKBD...

@nodevel: How did you get the bare-bones version? I don't see any way to get that. Is that some dev test thingy?

It's no dev test thingy, as the first TOHKBD has been out for some time (and this bare-bones version has been the solution there as well).
See the 'other' folder in https://github.com/kimmoli/tohkbd .

I'll be probably happy already with a scandinavian keyboard, but for the DIY-ers who would like to make their own keypad, can you explain exactly what they would need? A <material?> laser-engraving facility?

That might be the answer to all those people asking for French/Spanish/Lithuanian etc layout. Instead of the one-line VKB showing just the space bar, have it show all the modifiers (acute, grave, umlaut etc). No need for special layouts with accented characters. At least for the Latin based alphabets, Cyrillics might need to be a separate option.

yes.

to summarize:

- the most used layouts will be available
- if there is enough demand we will add extra layouts
- you can get blank keypads or edit your standard one at ANY laser-engraving facility, we provide all files you need
- you can edit and load custom keypad layouts on the software side
- you can add custom characters to virtual keyboard

should be enough options. if anyone is still unhappy i challenge you to find another producer that provides more options.

Hi Dirk,

the wooden panel, is it just glued to the back?
If Yes, is it possible to get the panel separately, to decide for myself if I want to glue it on the back or not.

If you want to rip it off that is totally possible, but I am not delivering half a product ;)

Re: TOHKBD rev2

The wooden back is actually what annoys me the most with tohkbd2, and I'm one of those who supported the kbd project since prototype 1. The wooden back is just too conspicuous and too "look at me I'm beautiful and I my owner spent a lot of money just for my handsomeness" for me, but there is no alternative option so I'll go for it (and maybe paint it un black at some point). :)

Re: TOHKBD rev2

I think this is quite an important question: Is there really no way the virtual keyboard can be hidden with tohkbd open?

I can't believe people talk about what the back looks like, but don't care, that there's going to be virtual keyboard always visible, covering 1/3 of the screen in landscape... When you close the keyboard, the full virtual keyboard is not going to pop up, but you will need to hold the space key and switch the layout. And you will need to do this again when you open the keyboard, to switch to the stripped down keyboard version. Unless I'm mistaken...?

PS: Not that I'm not buying - I look forward to the keyboard very much - but I think that this should be thought through as it makes half the experience.

Well, it's a software issue... you can vote here: https://together.jolla.com/question/...-is-connected/

Kabouik 2014-10-28 13:55

Re: TOHKBD rev2

I am really concerned about it actually because it was a good workaround for the prototype kbd I have, but not convenient enough for a "final" solution in my opinion. I thanked your last post about it to show my interest on that matter but it was probably a little bit too shy of me.

Perhaps Kimmoli or someone from Jolla (or formerly from Jolla) could better answer on that question.
