Re: Periodic speculation about the next firmware (PR1.2) starring drunk Laughingstok as Chuck Norris -- now with trout!

Question: Some hours ago I installed the Qt4.6 packages separately using dpkg, because I needed to test my app. (It segfaulted cause I didn't have the libs installed). Anyway, just out of curiosity I now tried going into the program manager to see if something new had arrived. What I see is Maemo5 (3.2010.02-8) and if I take "information" by holding down on it, I get the following info (roughly translated from swedish):
"For installation of this maemo5 update the program for updating of Nokia software is required on your computer, connect to the computer using a USB cable blahblah..."

What the hell? Is this the PR1.2 or what the hell is it?

Ok, sorry for that, but isn't 4 minutes a lot in this noisy nonsense-talk thread ?

EDIT: And besides, I already thought I got that 1.1.1 WAY ago, the update that prepared for 1.2...

You replaced some packages manually and now the system thinks it has to be reinstalled because of missing dependencies...

Thanks, that makes sense of course. I should have thought of that, because I knew I had gotten that 1.1.1 (OTA) before.
It may however not be clear to everyone that this is what happens. So I should skip that update then this time?

If you want to keep your Qt4.6 packages you manually installed... yeah skip it.

On a general, short term scope analysis:

- if a firmware release is required to enter a new market, profit is not possible unless you release the firmware release for that market.

- if a firmware release isn't required to keep the money from people that have already bought your product, releasing it doesn't generate any short term profit.

*shrug*

Personally, in this context I just think they're not releasing the firmware update because it hasn't completed quality testing successfully. I mean, that seems to be a very obvious reason for me.

Larswad 2010-05-05 15:50

Re: Periodic speculation about the next firmware (PR1.2) starring drunk Laughingstok as Chuck Norris -- now with trout!

volt, yes, and further I think the delay might be a positive thing for other regions. Maybe Nokia's has chosen the Hongkong people to become their guinea pigs. If the fw has any sucky properties, they will suffer from the them first.
By the time it arrives to other regions the release is as shiny as a babys assss...teriod.

*wishes Nokia one day understands that open source's development philosophy is based on the "release early, release often" paradigm*

because UK likes tea? Kernel Sanders didn't like tea, and he placed a clause in the contracts for the UK. That, "Under NO circumstances shall a KFC store be allowed to be open 24 hours!!!"
:D

But you're just in time for the 4 kibipost mark. This is a geek forum after all.

Not sure there's room in the thread title for your kitty's bush. Maybe we can remove the (now irrelevant) stuff about PR1.2 to make space

Indeed. All that stuff about PR1.2 is irrelevant. We all know it's never going to see the light of day.
And if/when it finally does, it will be obsolete.

Why they put in a official website a version that is leaked and supposedly not the 1.2 final version?

yes just what the leaked version is.

I think there was already a pr1.2 bet thread... I think I said the 28th of april... Needless to say everyone got it wrong.

i personally think the real reason why Nokia arent releasing the update is cuz they want all those folk in HK to feel important... Plus I bet someone said something like "Boy I cant wait for Pr1.2 cuz it will have XXX awesome feature" somewhere on this thread and Nokia were like "**** we forgot that one" so pulled it to make the change.

I blame it on the "Pr1.2 will clean my house" jibes :P

Guys I have a question? how come we can't build an update ourselves?! I have no idea about programming nor coding and really nothing about Linux, but I'm enjoying the browsing and the connection speed, well plus many other little stuff here and there, but really why the guys at nokia are able to release an update and you can't?
