I use *Maemo* an operating system based on *Debian* *Linux*. No, just like *Windows* is an operating system and *OSX* by *Apple* is an operating system, so is *Debian*, or *Ubuntu*, which are both using the *Linux* kernel, just like *Maemo*. So how do you explain Maemo to someone who has no clue what the phrase 'operating system' means? |

Re: maemo.org changes now that we have m.n.c & FN
I just want to explain something real quick here, and by no means do I care for Microsoft or Monster in any way.
As pointed out, Monster has sued almost everyone using the monster name. Remember when Microsoft sued Mike Roe Soft, a company created by Mike Roe? A lot of people jumped on them for doing so because let's face it, it's stupid sounding that those companies would perceive them as a threat. Typically, lots of bloggers jumped on the situation without understanding the why behind it. (No, this isn't a dig at you, Ki.) Truth is... they are a threat, however an indirect one. US law basically forces copyright owners to vigorously defend their copyrights at all times or else they risk losing them. This is especially true when a brand becomes so powerful that people use the copyright as a generic term. Think about Kleenex for an example. It's also why Google was trying to discourage people from saying "I'll Google it". That's the real reason using "Maemo" isn't the smartest thing from a liability standpoint. Nokia just doesn't typically go after anyone though. |
Re: maemo.org changes now that we have m.n.c & FN
Here's the thing, Nokia isn't making money off Maemo, they're making money on N900 sales. There's really no loss in someone using the name Maemo, there might be loss in China from sales of the Coolpad N900, although I doubt anybody would mistakingly buy it, when they want the Nokia N900.
I understand the legal ramifications, but again, you'd have to prove that someone was trying to wrongfully take away business from a product or service. Having a domain with Maemo in the URL does not do that, I'm fairly damn certain that's the opposite of my intentions. I want people to use the N900, even if they only use it for browsing the web and making calls, because users bring developers, and developers mean better and more apps, faster development, and in open source, more collaboration. I don't think the simi-tech guy, why thinks Firefox on his phone is cool, is going to want to hear about MicroB, and it's differences between Fennec, or other mini browsers. I'm not trying to deceive anyone, but give them a fair amount of information before jumping into Maemo.org. I'm not making a dime with the blog, and couldn't care less. I'm a convergence guy, I love what Nokia is doing, and can't wait to get my N900 (if anyone's got an Oceans 11 plot to get their N900 early, I'm in). I'm excited, and want to keep the buzz going, let more people know about it, and just like my N810, show it off to every person I can. |

Some people are twisting the facts surrounding the N900's AT&T 3G abilities (or rather the lack thereof). Others are eluding to T-Mobile subsidizing the N900, or flat out confirming it, etc. Some people obviously don't understand, but are making assumptions, others are either flat out lying or inferring FAR too much about the tech specs. Such as the N900 having an FM receiver. Although this is probably possible through software, it is nowhere near confirmed to be possible to make the FM transmitter receive just yet. |
