Correct. During his lightning session this afternoon, Igor specifically warned against locking the processor at 500 or 600 MHz. Doing so will burn out the N900.

Alright, I'm getting a little off-topic now, but how exactly does the N900 clock itself? Will it even run at 600MHz? What does it mean to "lock the processor" at x frequency? I had kind of assumed that the processor works like speedstep stuff, going to higher speeds if there was a more demanding task, i.e. watching a youtube video.

If this is not the case, is there a way to throttle up the processor for short periods of time if better performance is needed? Scarier still, if this is the case, does that mean that I might melt my N900 if I watch 2-3hours of video continuously on Hulu?

Yes, cpufreq handles the speedstepping. For users, there's absolutely no need to worry about any of this. ;)

Eesh, so it can't even do 600 at all times (if I'm processing this correctly?)

So? Unless you're transcoding video 24/7 there's almost no need for it to be at 600MHz at all times.

Lock means that you would be running it full tilt at 600 Mhz always.

The way processors usually work is by throttling up and down depending on what is demanded of the user at the time. The reason why I wonder about this is like your concern (though not so much the melting rather than the performance of the device). What if you engage something that requires the processor to run at a high level continously?

Generally, when you speak of locking or throttling a processor it is at a speed below which it is designed to operate. This would, primarily, be to conserve battery and reduce heat. This is done automatically by many CPUs depending on the load. It can also be done manually for some CPUs but I don't know if this is the case for th N900.

What you are talking about is overclocking the processor. This cannot be done automatically and I've never seen it done manually. Instead, it is done semi-permanently through the hardware or the BIOS. It is generally used for PC gaming machines.

If anything, in small devices, you will see underclocking. The iphone, for example, underclocks its processors to increase battery life. This could theoretically be undone but I don't think it applies to the N900 in any case.

I am so ready to change from my At&T plan. Another reason for changing phones (to the N900) as well as plans.

If this new plan is true, and happens, I know about 10 people who will be changing their plans. From both the same network and from other networks. The idea behind this plan puts such a force behind Tmo, that the move from them being 4th to being much higher will be at such a blisteringly fast pace, that I don't think the other carries will stand a chance to catch up for quiet awhile. After all Tmo's tech sup is the best I've seen so far :)

My only question aside from everyone's 'Will they subsidize??' question is *how long* can they keep the pricing up?

Just to get back on topic:

TMO claims their announcement is a game changer. Personally, I can’t see how carrying one or two great phones, Blackberry and/or n900, could be a game changer. Super-competitive pricing perhaps might work, but a good line-up of phones, doesn't seem to be a game changer. Sprint has done the pricing thing, and that hasn't helped enough yet. So my guess the game changer is something else.

It’s true that the TMO Sprint merger rumors have been around for a few years, but I think that fact is reason enough to suspect that a merger may be imminent.

Both Sprint and TMO are dying out there and both need to grow quickly now more than ever before. Everyone's tired of the rumors, so no one really believes it, but large corporations often take years to finally decide to merge. In the past both have expressed the willingness, but the times were wrong. I think this UK Telegraph article is convincing; especially in view of the recent merger of TMO UK and France Telecom Orange, and that the chief executive at Deutche Telecom has pledged to reverse the fortunes of both T-Mobile UK and T-Mobile US http://tinyurl.com/puusu8

50 bucks flat rate for everything is going to change the hell out of the US market if its actually the case. It undercuts the bejebus out of pretty much every other company
