That is nothing to do with form factor and purely a software addition that was documented at the time as being required to allow one handed usage for occasional use.

Books are portrait for binding purposes: checked with a publishing colleague on this one to be sure. Also reading tends not to be interactive with the medium and mobile internet devices are. The use case I quoted was for the web as that was the point raised in the posting being answered.

Recent studies on the iPhone and iTouch show that the majority of usage time is in landscape so that might not be the best example to pick. Our own company usage studies actually showed that greater than 63% of such users found the menus being portrait orientated annoying.

Well I did suggest raising a brainstorm and requesting the functionality but it would appear that moaning rather than actually trying to get a genuine change implimented is preferred. Go figure!

The E72 is the sucessor to those and it is not narrower.

True true, but the device is still in phase 4/5 right? Therefore the software is still incomplete. The hardware is completed since designed, designed flaw of the device from the beginning but nothing is perfect right :D

One question is: What if portrait mode is coming to N900, will you or are you going to use it?

Let's be honest with us all. I'm not believing people say "NO i won't touch it ever...period", why? because if the functions are there why not using it. As for now, it is may be not possible to get full UI portrait mode but developers have a choice to stay on Landscape mode or Portrait mode, or even both when QT4.6 is out on N900.

Let's face it, the fact that portrait mode is very common in every phone device out there in the market right now. And people got used to that view and they wanting to be able to use in that view. For a small percentage of an outcast users who used 770, and N800, N810 before, they do not give a "F***" rat "ar**" about portrait mode. And some other small percentage like me, is fine with landscape but also fine with portrait.

So the world has to be suitable for those people to live in right? If this is the world of mobile devices era, then nothing is out of the question.

Can you quote this recent study?

Personally, I've always found portrait orientation to be more intuitive for most reading materials found on the web:

- They're mostly presented in thin columns, which tend to make the article longer (vertically). This translates to oversized letters and less rows displayed per page when viewed in landscape mode on a modern mobile browser (which can zoom to a <div>'s width), which means you'll have to scroll far more often than when you read this in portrait mode. (assuming average+ reading speed).

The main advantage of using the iPhone in landscape mode, to me, is the wide virtual keyboard.... or when viewing videos, and (more rarely) the occasional sites which use very small typeset to be displayed crisp enough on iPhone's screen resolution. But, the N900 shouldn't have this problem.

Using your logic, E72 should be bigger. Did it get bigger?

How come you completely ignored the point which is. they are getting smaller?

This is your opinion. Don't state as though it is fact. Were you part of the designers meeting for the E72? Can you link me where you found this fact?

A survey conducted at my university shows 76% of people did not buy the n900 because of lack of Portrait operation. :rolleyes:
