Have they heard of J2ME? How about full client-side Java? Bet they didn't hear about that either!. Sheesh!. With the device's memory, it could as well run full Java Swing apps, if there was a JVM available.

Hm, so Nokia don't want either java applets or full client-side Java on the N800? That's _extremely_ unfortunate. Personally I don't mind so much the java applications, but java applets (as in java applet support in the browser) is _critical_ because it's not like you can just replace the applet with something else: My bank uses a little java applet to pass through the security stuff, after that it's just https as usual. But without the java applet support I can't access my bank on the go, which is what the N800 is for: Networking on the go. And there's nothing I can do about it. If I call the bank and ask them to rewrite their netbank to use ajax or something I would be as a minimum laughed at, or called an idiot.

10 people so far asked me for a copy... i deleted it right after I got it though. I would have kept it if I knew people wanted it. BUT... I know who still has it.

@TA-t3,

You are more than correct. As I stated/wrote, when I mentioned Java (not as implementing this feature, but as to why it was not there) I was told that Java is not a bad idea but there are several different flavors, requiring JVM's. Flash and Ajax would be easier implementations I suppose. For my client, the US military, Java is not an important issue the things we are looking for do not require it.

Time will tell if Java is implemented. If so, then Nokia changed their mind, I was wrong and you will get to access your bank. If no, then well....... I wouldn't hand my hat on waiting for a clarification. We will see what shakes loose in the next OS release.

It may have been convoluted from Job's recent remarks about the iPhone...

Quote:

There has been much Internet discussion, for example on Javalobby about Steve Jobs comments on Java ME .

Quote:

"Java’s not worth building in [to the phone]" and
"It’s this big heavyweight ball and chain."
Many people have taken this to be an attack on Java ME. However, I see it a bit differently. You have to put this into context.

The iPhone is playing catch up. The iPhone hardware and software teams have had (and still have) a lot of technologies to put together. They obviously evaluated Java ME at some stage and correctly identified that it would take a very large amount of effort to support the current (and future) JSRs. Over a relatively longer period of time, OS and phone OEM companies in the Java ME ecosystem have expended (and continue to invest) very significant amounts of effort to support Java ME. I believe it just wasn’t seen to be worth (financially sensible) porting onto the iPhone and would have represented an onward financial ‘ball and chain’. Hence, Apple may have arrived too late to join the Java ME club - because late membership has become too expensive.

In any event the costs would be true for "building it in" to any device...

However, anybody can d'load a JVM for Linux from IBM for the cost of registration and a promise not to do evil things with it. >> http://www-128.ibm.com/developerwork...es.html#N10048

From there it may be just a matter of porting it to Maemo...
I don't have the skills and I'm sure there would be keyboard issues but hey, it's out there. :)

The N800 IT is great piece of technology, I only wish they focused a little bit more on the internet part of it .... Video streaming is still very choppy and crashes on loading some newer webpages they need to improve on Web 2.0 features.
And as for Skype, I really wish they implemented it instead of Google Talk, which I havent used once yet. Hopefully the upcoming release of the iphone will give Nokia jump start.
