We've all seen that they make alternative versions in the prototype phase... Why not keep a few alternative version available on nokia.com. It's not like Nokia has a history of shying away from model fragmentation. Why not just open up a few alternatives on a select design, i.e. like the existing E7: http://talk.maemo.org/attachment.php...1&d=1308615083 Heck, they could even make the System radio button into a multi select, make geeks pay extra for multiboot. And the keyboard could be detachable, the stylus hole plugable, so they didn't have to have different hardware versions of the casing. |
Re: Who is going to make a geek phone?
If the OpenMoko people were able to do it, what's stopping Maemo.org from doing it too?
I propose an jumbo sized OMAP4 device with 2 SD slots, 2GB of LPDDR2 RAM (not on the SoC) , replaceable camera modules, replaceable GPS modules, and replaceable basebands. (USB 3G dongles?) It should also have its own USB3-A female connectors on the side, a micro-AB port for charging/data and a really, really big battery pack. C'mon TMO, time to make that 6-inch whopper! |

Most ppl here want a pocket-able device, not something you need to transport with a truck....

Re: Who is going to make a geek phone?
It's funny how many folks are willing to rally behind the FM transmitter. I've had battles with folks about how I'm not a fan of transmitting files via Bluetooth when I have access to Wi-Fi - it's faster. I've yet to see the ultra-mega-geek emerge in this thread and talk about the loveliness of the IR port and all the usefulness of that feature.
Ultimately, let's be honest. If you bought a car with a irreplaceable stereo, don't have access to a stereo that accepts USB or Bluetooth, or (like me and Texrat) live in an area that is FM radio dense and cannot locate a clear enough signal... and that's what you rally behind and not rally behind vendor support of any kind... dare I say it, y'all are a weird bunch of mother****ers. I'd rather have ongoing support than a FM transmitter - it won't work for me. I'd rather have Bluetooth 4.0 than an IR port. I'd rather have 1gb of RAM, with an AMOLED screen that's safely tucked behind glass than have an easily scratched plastic screen. I'd rather have access to stuff that is updated regularly than WONTFIX. I'd rather have something that I can own, contribute, or support my damn self if its open. I'd rather have something that... well, works and I don't have to worry about the damn microUSB falling out and instead, I have to pull out the battery, place in a spare battery, charge it on my desktop - or however I might have to work that in since I travel a bit (that just SOUNDS clumsy as hell) - and then go from there. An FM transmitter is the absolute last damn thing on my mind when I buy a gadget that is for making phone calls. Nice to have, I'd never use it. Especially one that didn't work while charging. Feh. Rally behind moot points. Maemo 5 is dead. Maemo 6 is starting to look stillborn with Elop showing off the WP7 variant of the same pretty enclosure not even 24 hours after the fact. And keep wanting stuff placed into your phone that a minority of folks want that invariably drives up the price and will ensure it's not a consumer purchased device. Oh... that's right. A phone for geeks would never exactly make money, it would just have to exist to satisfy a group that's more fickle than the Justin Bieber fans. And for the record, this rant isn't towards Volt. Just something I've been wanting to get off my chest about how geeks seem to look only at the things they singularly want, but never get outside of their own egocentric and eccentric needs to discuss how their device could easily support a consumer AND their own needs. No. Geeks gotta say that they want it their way, or they'll boycott, petition, hack or pout about it all day. |
