Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

About 1 in 4 times I am losing email headers when I try to download the message bodies.

Is there any way to download the missing header again. I assume there is a log file somewhere but I'm not sure where it is.

Is there any way to bring back the flashing LED when new mail arrives? I miss that from the earlier versions of Modest. I was using my Chinook partition yesterday and my N800's LED started flashing to tell me I had e-mail (actually, it was telling me that I had received e-mail since the last time I had used that partition, not that I had new mail, but anyway), and I thought, "what ever happened to the pretty flashing e-mail light?"

i suspect there is something hidden in gconf.

i had to go in there to find the "done charging" led setting...

My Modest still works that way.

I have the same issue. No e-mail notifications. I've check both the auto-update setting in Modest, as well as the global e-mail notification in the Control Panel. No luck. The other LED notifications are working fine.

Thanks for the suggestions tso, but I couldn't find anything in gconf either.
Code:

Nokia-N810-23-14:~# gconftool-2 --get /system/osso/dsm/leds/PatternCommunicationEmail
true

Perhaps there is another place in gconf I should be looking. For example, I am wondering what this is
Code:

Nokia-N810-23-14:~# gconftool-2 --get /apps/modest/alarm_id
300

Any new insight?

except that i cant see the /apps/modest/alarm_id on my N800, no...

still, it could be something specific to N810's, but then my N800 thinks it has a slide (complete with the random issues with using a bluetooth keyboard)...

Odd... It has something to do with the time interval for the auto update, as mine is set to 5 minutes (300 seconds).

Still no luck with any e-mail notifications. I even sucked it up and re-flashed to a clean slate. Then immediately upon configuring my IMAP account, did a test. Nothing

Still trying....

Sounds like #3542.

I've:
* Deleted ~/.modest
* Deleted /var/lib/gconf/..../modest
* Removed modest entries from /var/lib/alarmd/alarm_queue.xml

I've re-set up my account but not yet tried automatic updating. I can't think of anywhere else where something might be affecting it.

Huh? No it doesn't! "Unable to automatically send to GMail SMTP server" has nothing to do with a blinking LED (or any other notifications).

Yeah, maybe I should have mentioned, I'm not using Gmail.

My bad, but I obviously read:

...as it was not intended. I'm unable to test, but I suspect #3542 may be wider than GMail.

Looking in alarmd for anything to do with an LED-only problem ain't gonna do much good. How are you definining "notification", then?

* Any automatic sync - tells me I have new email without manually clicking the 'refresh' button.
* The flashing mail icon at the bottom left.
* The flashing mail icon at the bottom left and the flashing LED along with it.

Cheers,

Andrew

Come to mention, all three of those.
I kept modest running, just to see if it would auto-update as expected, but it just sat there. I had to refresh myself.

Even just tapping on the refresh icon at bottom right did nothing. I had to actually select the INBOX folder before it told me I had a new message. Each subsequent folder that I select (drafts, junk, queue, trash) it quickly says "Retrieving" at the bottom right. Is that proper behavior for IMAP?

An altogether different problem than I expected maybe?
Perhaps it's not a problem with the notifications, but Modest's auto-update function. This still seems odd, as right now my tablet can be considered "out-of-the-box"

pondering.......

My problem is just the blinking LED. I get the flashing mail icon at the bottom left, but no LED. So we have different problems :)

Well, I often get the new mail chime and blinking LED, but no flashing mail icon at the bottom left. Perhaps if we trade tablets with the correct frequency, we'll get the problems to balance each other out.

..or maybe rub the tablets together to get them to exchange DNA. I hear bacteria do this.

Interesting. Do you get the LED blinky with other incoming chats or voice calls? Those work fine for me.

I wonder if yours is a simple gconf setting as mentioned earlier. I've dealt with gconf a little, but am by no means an authority.

the only gconf key I can think of is
/system/osso/dsm/leds/PatternCommunicationEmail
This AFAIK is the setting from Control Panel > Display > LEDs > Email Message Received checkbox.

gconf-editor definitely makes it easier to look through all that stuff.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

I lost the blinking light sometime after Diablo. Chinook Modest still makes the LED blink (when I go back to my Chinook partition), but not Diablo Modest.

Here's what my /system/osso/dsm/leds/ folder looks like in Configuration Editor:

PatternBatteryCharging......[ ]
PatternBatteryFull.............[ ]
PatternCommonNotification.[*]
PatternCommunicationCall...[*]
PatternCommunicationChat.[*]
PatternCommunicationEmail.[*]
PatternDeviceOn...............[ ]

I'm pretty sure I still get the blinky-blink when I get a chat... Let me test... No, I don't! I get the noise, and the flashing notifier... but no LED. So it isn't a Modest problem, it is a Diablo problem...

Any other ideas?

superbondbond 2008-09-11 17:11

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

Odd...

I have all the LED notifications enabled, and I just tested again with a chat to make sure it works. It does. Sound, flashing icon, and flashing LED.

It's beginning to look like we might have two different problems. Mine being more related to Modest's auto-update, yours being confined to the LED itself.

Just ran across Bug #3689, which seems to be what I am experiencing.

Re: Modest Beta for OS2008 Now Out

Just to close off my issue (no blinking LED), it was a problem with Powerlaunch, not with Modest. It took me a while to realize that Powerlaunch had killed my LEDs and my alarms. Thanks for the troubleshooting help, folks.

there is a reason why i stopped bothering with powerlaunch ones i found out i could get a reboot entry by editing a file ;)
