As a strong OpenSource supporter I learned the answer to the question "When is it ready?" - "When its done!" Of course I also whould like to have an official delay announcement instead of watching spooky release dates passing someone have to enter in their online shopping system. I'm waiting for a dual atom server mainboard that is not very present on German market now for over 3 weeks and this was for shorten the time till the N900 will arrive and having some fun in building a new data server. Now its seems I get both stuff at the same time ;-) Kopf hoch! Only at that point will the delivery time be somehow foreseeable. And that process (burning eproms and flash disks, last QC testing, packaging, dispatching to the central distribution center, and then onwards to smaller and smaller entities) will certainly take a handful of days. The proof of openness that we could ask Nokia/Maemo would be for them to make public, not when Nokia has officially started delivery, but when Maemo has pressed the send button for the transfer of the definitive image. (then, 30 seconds after that button is pressed a new bug will be found - but that's life) |

I think the problem that's developing here (people getting frustrated, endlessly checking with support staff in retailers) is happening because of a lack information and a lack of an obvious source of information. I've owned several Nokia phones and I've always had a problem actually buying one on release - typically the announcement is made and the device becomes available seemingly randomly in different markets. One of the reasons people are really interested in the N900/Maemo is the openness of the platform and I think this gives a hint that people want more and more information about what's going on. That has to feed through into the marketing and logistics as well. When delays happen there's always a risk that the buzz already created around the product will start to turn sour and the product launch will be a failure when it does happen. I think people would understand delays happen if they just knew about them and why - instead people focus on retailer due dates which are of course very inaccurate and arbitrary. Then they get angry when the retailer date changes suddenly. Something like a twitter feed would be great - just something to say you're pushing out development a couple of weeks to respond to user feedback. |

Nokia will release an official statement once the device is shipping. Not that this isn't very frustrating, clearly the device is not ready yet. Once the firmware reaches "1.0 PR" it is it will be released, not before. So looks like they are not going to release until they are happy enough with the firmware. I would be quite happy with pre-release firmware, but I am used to this kind of release - I bet there are a lot of people out there who would scream loudly if the firmware isn't up to scratch, esp. given the reviews from Eldar etc. I hope I can have a peak at it at the London Nokia shop |
Re: Did your N900 ship today continued
I'm not sure how many of you have pre-ordered devices/software in the past, but my experience every time has been that release dates are always missed, and by a huge amount! It would not surprise me if December rolls around before i see my n900. The fact that i got sucked into it once again actually thinking it would ship "on time" according to various unreliable sources is no fault but mine.

From a business standpoint though, sometimes instead of just pushing the release date back, and back, and back it's better to just flat out and say "This is how much time we need, and here's the expected date you'll get it." We all want this awesome device, and we understand sometimes hiccups happen, but we'd be more understanding if Nokia just gave us a definitive date. Sometimes saying you need more time than you actually need, in-case something else pops up along the road you didn't expect is better than saying nothing at all. It's better to have stated you need more time and not need it, than to need it and not have stated it. |

Re: Did your N900 ship today continued
In reference to your questions on the expected shipment date of the Nokia N900, let me tell you the latest information from Nokia:
The Nokia N900 is a great example of what we and the open source community have been able to achieve with Maemo software. We are working closely with open source developers and for example, at the Maemo Summit in October, we loaned 300 pre-production units to get more feedback from the community. This feedback is extremely important to us and as such we also want to provide the best user experience with the Nokia N900. We expect it to start shipping during November 2009. @ sharper: Nokia needs the phone to be released Q4 to boost profits and quarterly earnings, otherwise stockholders get the diapers in a crunch and start asking if Nokia is taking the correct direction. One quarter of profit loss is understandable but two, no matter what company you are the business plan is called into question. @ Peter: Thanks for giving us a release time frame. |

Re: Did your N900 ship today continued
I will keep my preorder, although I'm not very happy about the fact, that the release date was changed 3 times by now. 1st, 12th, 30st october and now "during" november.
i can understand that several users cancelled their preorders... The next time i wont preorder anymore... |

And if i remember it correctly, the phone isn't supposed to have the same release date on the selective markets thats its going to be released in. |
Re: Did your N900 ship today continued
So now STOP everyone quoting any shop or store about any in stock dates. None of them will have it in stock in 2, 8 or 12 days...
Now close this thread or i will go insane... |
