Hey,
I saw that version 2.0 will move to a database rather than filesystem for storing the maps. I don't suppose there are any compiled 2.0 beta versions around with this functionality ?

Heading off on holiday soon and trying to load up memory card, but running out of space, very rapidly with the unfortunately small files !

The 770 is the most interesting 'gadget I've seen for the $. I'm 'an old-guy'
but have been am early adaptor for a long time, I'm running out of energy to
see how new devices might work for me.

Please give detailed insturctions for the challenged old timers that have never
see used this OS.

THanks n advance

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

Is there any way I can use my own Google Maps route with this software?

Now every one knows that we can edit(by dragging the blue line in the map) our given route in the maps and google will give new directions accordingly. How I can use this feature in our mapper software?

And is there any way I can use this software without GPS unit(like GPS offline mode)? I mean when i download the route and start my driving it should show my first instruction , once i complete that direction i just click next button or some button on the 770, then it will show my next instruction(in screen map also will move that that location) and it should show all instruction with scroll bar when ever i needed in the middle of driving and some arrow pointer should point to where i am ..... like that (just to avoid paper printout )

Sorry Gnuite for my stupid quastione - but it's so long time to wait for a new version - database map storing mechanism is needed veeery much (SD cards are always small :-()
When do you think you will release your new 2.0 maemo mapper version ?

Bug reporting:
During my very nice travel to Pyrenees mountains I have found a problem:
When charching of N800 is started (from my car cigarete lighter) Maemo Mapper stops showing the GPS tracking.
I always had to restart bluetooth + maemo mapper for start showing GPS tracking again.
My GPS is Nokia LD-3W.

Hello, I have n770 OS 2006 (49.2 latest one) 2 GB card, dual boot. I just updated Maemo mapper. Every thing is working fine, but when I touch any POI icon, it just crashes. How can I fix it. Shall I uninstall and install again ? I am not using any blutooth GTS, just plain mapper, with some POIs added my me using sqlite3.

Please help.
Thanks

Maybe there's an incorrect character in your poi database, check with a clean database and add your POIs one by one.

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

I uninstalled mapper 1.4.7-3 and then installed 1.4.7-2. (https://garage.maemo.org/frs/downloa...7-2_armel.deb). 1.4.7-2 is working fine wothout crash.

Just one more thing. http://eko.one.pl/index.php?page=Nokia770_software page shows that mapper can show different icons for different categories. I made icons 32x32 (jpeg as well bmp) and copied into directory as specified, but I still do not see icons. All I see is purple square icon. It will be a fun thing. But I can live without it. Mapper overall is excellent tool.

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

Yesterday I tried with voice instructions (just installed), the mapper software given me is little longer route to catch free way(i know this route comes from google, that is the reason i asked in my previous post saying how to use my custom route which is generated in google maps), so i took another shortcut route to high way. it is working fine with instructions when i started but in middle when i took different route it stopped giving me instruction (on display and voice), even my route is same from free way as mapper software gave me.

i didnt load return route because i know how to return. but in the middle of my return trip mapper software keep saying 'arrive at xxxxxx'. i know i confused mapper software by taking little off route in the middle of my journey, but my question is it normal behavior of mapper software or is it a bug?

It's normal, and you can fix it by using the "Reset" button from the "Route" menu. I'm going to make Maemo Mapper auto-reset when it detects that it is "confused," but in the meantime, you have to reset the route manually.

Resetting the route doesn't affect the route itself - just how maemo mapper is tracking your progress along the route. If you travel off the route for an extended period, it is possible for Maemo Mapper to lose track of where you are on the route. The "Reset" functionality fixes this.

Yep lost a few hundred miles of data for openstreet maps over last few weeks.
Usually crashes out when saving, however to day no probs, changed my routine to saving same file name at short intervals throughout a 3 hour journey.
Perhaps it there was an auto save option...

My iTrek GPS is modified at 5Hz and works quite fine with Mapper : Mapper reveive correctly 5Hz signal for positionning but saves the track only at 1 Hz :(

Mapper crashs sometimes when saving ; for OpenStreetMap mapping I manually save the track at the begin and every half hour.

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

Has anyone experience an issue with their Maemo Mapper (I have the N770) where after idling for awhile the screen turns white?

On my recent road trip that covered over 800 miles, any time I stopped at a gas station or rest area, my Maemo Mapper would be recording my trip (red line following the green line, route). When I got back into my car, the screen was white every time and each time I had to wait patiently for it to show the map again (over 5 minutes it seemed). Sometimes if I pressed a button the screen would show the map again, other times it wouldn't do anything.

Any ideas what may be causing this?

I also use the 770 with latest 2006 OS and have the same problem every time I use MM for more than a few minutes. I often have to put the cover onto the 770 in order to get MM to shut down as it usually locks up when I get the white screen described.

Python GPX / POI importer

I wrote a small python script to import waypoints from a GPX file in to a POI db:

http://longstair.com/gpx_to_poi

It uses pysqlite2. I understand that maemo's python bundles pysqlite3, but I've been too lazy to check in to that, so for now, it won't run on maemo. I imagine it'd be trivial to convert to pysqlite3.

It's usage is simple. You give it a GPX file and an existing poi.db, and it inserts each waypoint in to the POI. Optionally, you may specify a category ID to insert the waypoints in. By default, the new waypoints are put in the 'other' category.

If you're using the Nokia 770 (as opposed to the N800), then please install the gregale version of Maemo Mapper. Maemo Mapper is built for each target platform (770 vs. N800) with cpu-specific op-codes, and the CPUs in the 770 and N800 are different.

Google Maps always stops serving me maps after I download by panning around for about 10-15 minutes. (never happens on the desktop computer, of course.) When I go home I can download more maps for another 10-15 minutes before it stops sending them. When I go back to work another 10-15 minutes....etc. Grrrr! Virtual Earth has no such restriction - too bad the images aren't as good.

Thanks gnuite. And sorry for not mentioning my device, it is 770.

I am little confused finding gregale version, what I found is ... first I went to following page
https://garage.maemo.org/projects/maemo-mapper

and clicked 'download' button for "maemo-mapper-IT2007" that link goes to another download page
https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_...release_id=711

even that page title shows as "maemo-mapper-IT2006", I guess it is belongs to IT2007. from that page I have to install 1.4.7-2

Am I correct?

If I am wrong please give me a link from where I can install Maemo Mapper for my 770 installed with OS2007.

Thanks in advance.

The "-2" version is the 770 build, and the "-3" version is the N800 build ("-2" and "-3" are otherwise identical), so yes, install 1.4.7-2.

It should install whatever is appropriate for your platform, although I'm not sure what happens if you are running OS2007 (hacker edition) on a 770.

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

Thanks gnuit,

Looks like it is working fine after followed your instructions. I haven't tested much, but so far looking good (it was horrible before).

I guess, when I clicked link in the first post, it was installed with N800 version ! Many other softwares confuse like this and thinks this device is N800 where N770 is installed with OS2007.

I know it will be ready when it has to , but is there any estimated week/month when the new version of mapper will be released with DB support? Right now my 2GB card is full of maps(around a GB, the actual size is around 400MB or less) and OS2007(0.5GB). I can not accommodate any space for my music etc.

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

I have tried and it is really a great software!

But the google maps obtained for China is too rough - I can only see the name of the cities but nothing else... There IS China maps with detail streets from google China (http://ditu.google.cn), but I don't know how to obtain the correct URL name for the goole map which can give 256x256 gif format of maps that Mamo Mapper requires.

So one thing I can think about is to convert the existing map files of other formats (such as Pathaway, Ozi, etc.) to Mamo Mapper like.

Any detail tips about how to make it? I would like to try manual first and if appicable I am thinkg about some tools for automatic.

Thanks!

Use this URL Format:

http://mapgoogle.mapabc.com/googlech...d&y=%d&zoom=%d

(With your Nokia device, tap-and-hold on the above link and select "Copy Address", then paste it into Maemo Mapper as the "URL Format".)

Just curious how do you get the url?

I went to the URL that you sent me in my browser (any browser should work, I think, but I used a Mozilla-based one), and once I saw the javascript-enabled map, I right-clicked on it and selected "Copy Image Address to Clipboard". I then examined the URL and found the x, y, and zoom variables. This particular example's URL looked like this:

http://mapgoogle.mapabc.com/googlechina/maptile?v=w2.61&x=11&y=6&zoom=13

It was pretty easy to interpret because it was identical to normal Google's URL format. It was really just a matter of discovering the hostname and path of the map script (mapgoogle.mapabc.com/googlechina/maptile).

Take a look at this post to get an idea about how to convert lat/lon to tile number. If you know C, you can look at the code to get more details. Let me know if you have any specific questions about it.

I found that this could not be done in IE in windows... The right click will always bring out a context menu. But using the 770 self brownser it is succeesful to get the URL in this way. That's great!

I just started using mapper, and my initial thoughts are extremely positive. I find the flite voice is not loud enough considering road noise, etc. I think there should at least be a flite volume control in the program. Ideally, hooking it up to BT external speaker/speakerphone would solve this problem. Anyone care to share how they overcome the roadnoise issue-or do I just have an unusually loud car interior?!

Unfortunately, there isn't a volume control for flite itself. It just pipes the audio through the audio system, which uses Maemo's volume control. I wish I could make it louder...

Re: Maemo Mapper v1.4 for 770/N800

Most non-dedicated navigation hardware (including my Palm T3 w/TomTom) will have a problem getting loud enough (it's kind of always just that bit too low..). Or at least the sound tends to break up if you do manage to crank it high enough.

Your best bet is probably to plug the car's sound system into the headphone socket on the N800, if your system can accomodate it.

These kind of questions are often up on dedicted forums for phones and PDAs running navigation software, and some people find solutions where e.g. output from the navigation system will temporarily mute your CD or FM radio when it's got something to say ('turn around when possible' is the most dreaded one.. ;))

EDIT typo: almost->always

Thanks for the replies, gnuite and TA-t3. I trIed a small speaker attached to the IT, and while the volume was better, it looked like an eyesoar. Full BT support in the next firmware would make mapper even more the killer app.
