EDIT: @jalyst I think this is one of the tips that should definitely be in the OP!

One comment; Outlook calendar sync to/from N9 over bluetooth seems to be a bit error prone occasionally. I didn't had any major problems at the beginning, but today the sync suddenly just broke down. No matter what I did, the sync stuck to first item to be synced and after a while gave an error about phone being out of range.

I solved that by booting my laptop, but then I was stuck to a new problem; sync went through, but didn't transfer any calendar entries during the sync. After few trials, I finally managed to solve this one by turning Outlook into offline-mode.

After that sync worked perfectly, although few yearly recurring entries were changed to weekly recurring (for some reason). I tried to run the sync again with Outlook in online-mode, but it started to show again the same symptoms as in the first case.

I wonder how common this problem is, as my colleague had also same kind of issues yesterday with her N9.

hello
i finally got my N9 in switzerland :) and i love it

but i have some problems which worked fine with the n900 and dosn't with de N9 so maybe somebody can help me?

first: if i have birthday dates noted in my contacts but they are not displaying in the calendar what is quite annoying! somebody knows how to fix this ore does this necessite an app? (worked automaticaly with n900)

second: when i send an email from my N9 (with gmail account) the mail is not saved in an outbox or something similar. so i can't see the mails i have sent. that worked perfectly with n900!

thanks for replies!

I think Birthdays is currently missing and will be included in the next Pr1.1 or PR 1.2 update? IIRC.

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

Hello everyone,

just got a brand new N9 and really like it so far. Have a couple of questions:

I have added my Google account and it retrieved my contacts but it synced only my Google Talk one, and did not even retrieve the phone numbers. Is there a way to download every contact or at least retrieve the phone numbers associated to the Google Talk ones?

Is there a way to sort the mails by conversation? I had a look but could not figure something out and being used to Gmail conversation, it is tough to see all my messages with any grouping.

I am also a user of Google Reader and I found only one application handling it called NewsFlow but it is really limited feature-wise. Any other application which supports this aggregator out there?

Thank you for your help :)

Use MfE to sync google contacts IIRC.

Mail: not yet, maybe in pr 1.1 within a month. Or an alternative email program.

Thank you for your quick answer. Tried with Exchange and even if the account has been successfuly added, it seems to fail syncing content (I always have this red arrow and the "Failed" message) but it might come from the WiFi network I am connected to.

Let's hope indeed the 1.1 will bring new features to the default mail client. Do you have a good alternative email client?

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

Nope, I like the native email client since im not a huge emaily kinda guy. It does push, it lets me add several recipients and several attatchments very easily, etc. No threaded view isnt a huge deal for me, but would be cute to have.

What comes to x forwarding from n9, the file /etc/ssh/sshd_config has a row:

Code:

X11Forwarding yes
Which of course would indicate the possibility of x forwarding. I do not know if some of my settings are not right, but trying the standard x forwarding commands resulted the x window opening in the host (n9) and not in the client (my desktop from which I was sshing into the phone). Which of course is slightly peculiar.

Anyway, if someone is playing with developer mode, I recommend reading following:

http://www.basshero.org/blog/113/nok...e-ssh-security

For some reason I was not able to ssh into the device over 3g, only via usb cable.

That happened on the N900 the first time I tried it. Then I read it wasn't possible and I stopped fiddling. Lately out of curiosity I tried again and it partially worked. Though ultra slow and not for the stock applications.
The difference between the two tries is about a year, a power-kernel, cssu and some other tweaks and patches.

qwazix 2011-10-18 16:44

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

The battery cost of ssh is not so much on N900 at least, and I would always trade it for the assurance it gives in case of lost lock code, faulty touchscreen, unresponsive device and other unfortunate events.

It sounds similar to issues I've seen described here
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=78480
That is the dedicated thread for MfE related issues.
Devs have been great there, getting feed-back & providing answers, where possible.
BigBadGuber's been trolling occasionally, but no one feeds him :D

If you only need IMAP this might be okay
http://trojita.flaska.net/

Although I don't think the dev plans to start work on it till Dec.
I checked with him on IRC the other day.
He was part of the CDP so not sure why he's not done anything.
http://wiki.meego.com/Community_Offi..._program/Nokia
I guess the terms aren't that strict...

That link above might be useful to find other email clients
And perhaps this one too....
http://wiki.meego.com/Porting_list_from_maemo

There's several other places to check but can't recall OTTOMH.

If so, why did the tablet see the hotspot from another phone?

Is the tablet an android tablet? Android doesn't show ad-hoc networks by default.

http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=82

What was the phone and hotspot app it was able to connect to?

Maybe this other phone provides access point wifi with his hotspot (access point wifi is different from ad hoc wifi, and not all devices support the second one)

Not sure if it's been said or asked... but since I'm an Android user, I have all of my phone numbers stored on my main Gmail account.

Even WP7 picked that up. Does Harmattan do the same?

Hi. Does anyone know why my N9 keeps connecting to the Internet when one or more connections are set to " use automatically". I want it to go on line and check for emails as I set it to do (every 4 hours), and then disconnect automatically when it has checked for emails. So I don't have to manually close the connection.

I am used to that my C7 does that.

Thanks in advance.

AFAIK, people have been using MfE with Google info to get all their Gmail contacts numbers into the phone.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'm 90% certain I've seen it a couple times in this thread or the myriad of others.

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

I am really amazed by how people can conserve their battery up to 1 full days. I tried most of the options including using only GSM mode. Let's talked about this morning. From 7am onwards, I am conencted to skype, facebook chat, google talk and MSNYM(via jabber) and i read some news, check some email and chat with someone here and there, max i give those usage a total 1.5 hours of continuous usage. After that I turned off my connection to chat though the feeds from twitter, fb and AP news are still updating in background (the update interval cannot be set, don;t know how). I also set my other RSS feeds to pull feeds every 3 hours. I turned off Push notification as well. Yet despite all these usage I am not getting 56% of battery left by 11.30am.

I checked with battery monitor, highest usage is from MeeGo system itself(no other detailed breakdown unfortunately). I had also enable developers mode but I doubt it affects the battery life. So why am I getting such a different battery life than some people claimed?

it is possible, when you set your tones, select choose from music collection, and you can choose an audio file you put ont he device (or i think you can put files in .ringtones)

I've got mine to go two days with 10% remaining, what is your active and idle usage? (when you first go into the monitor tap the top of the application to see some more info)

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

When I select a track from my music and press done, it defaults to one of the standard tones.

When I do the same for the alarm clock it registers the selected track but still plays some default tone.

toki 2011-10-19 06:39

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

yeh at start mine only displays the standard songs and would not allow me to select one of my own songs that iv put on the device..
i tried many times over and over...
i gave up, and complained to my friend about it and told him to try.. and as soon as he picked up the phone and tried it displayed all the songs on the device INCLUDING my songs..

sooo... im assuming that if you have JUST recently put a heap of songs on, it may take a while for it to register that its there for usage as ringtones etc

I've only got 4 tracks on it! Deleted the ones that came with it

randomdood 2011-10-19 06:44

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

it takes a while for the tracks to be selectable for a tone. try waiting 20minutes and try again.

toki 2011-10-19 07:04

Re: N9 owners: answer questions & get help!

what format are they in? possibly its not compatible with the device?

but yes, either way.. give it some time just incase..
i went back n forth the music player and trying to select it as a tone quite a few times before it showed up

Active usage is 2hour 43 mins

And Idle is 9h 32 mins as of today.

I develop a feeling that it's something that had to do with developer's mode turned on. I turned it off now and delete all the relevant packages see how it will improve my battery life.

What is your average current consumption in idle?

Mine was about 200mA, because every time after reboot there is always command "smartsearch" active consuming lots of CPU. I have to kill it by hand.

even with dev mode enabled, my idle usage is about 9mA without any connections, and about 20mA with wifi+skype+email checking every 20mins (3g internet instead of wifi takes it closer to 40mA idle)

My active usage is around 250mA, then again i never have a lot of apps open, i tend to use only a few at a time,

My active usage is between 200-300 mA, depending on what I do with the device.

Idle (no WiFi, Cellular only) is about 10 mA at home (where I do have very good 3G reception) and almost 30mA at work (at my desk reception is poor, jumping between 2G and 3G all the time). No difference with developer mode enabled.
