Re: Overclock the N900?
Oh, hey, I just noticed something. When I ran the fix for the unknown version problem it reintroduced the "-40" temp problem. Removing the battery fixes that.

Re: Overclock the N900?
I'm running at 850MHz with 450MHz DSP.
Decided to use dbus-scripts to limit it to 250MHz while charging, and it seems to make priority attempts to lock it when I plug in the charger, and then when I unplug I've allowed it to hit 850. I don't need the clock ramping up to anything over 250 really, since I only charge it while sleeping. I've also got anacron setup to throttle it back when I know I won't be using the device (certain locations in class, I get no signal and usually have my laptop anyways). It would also be trivial to make a small QT app with a slider, that would set the speed ceiling at certain times, having an option to use the proximity sensor and accelerometer to only allow throttle unlock when the device is out of pocket and in hands. |

That's why it makes me laugh when people say "it doesnt feel any hotter". Its stuck inside fairly thick plastic, on the bottom its behind the battery AND plastic, so you shouldn't be able to feel it until its REALLY hot internally. As for the person with the droid and GPS problems. They admitted to leaving it in direct sunlight, overclocked, heavily using GPS. Anyone leaving electronics in direct sunlight deserves any failures they get, its just plain stupid. You only get away with it on standalone GPS devices as they are usually really REALLY slow CPUs, but you will still destroy the plastic as it perishes in direct sunlight. I have seen old CRT PC monitor cases discolour and shatter due to exposure to direct sunlight. |
Re: Overclock the N900?
If your device is hot enough to emit gasses you can smell, you are done cooked to some degree. Unless it was the battery emitting the smell.
I have played MAME and PSX4ALL for over an hour with no heat issues at 800mhz. I can not distinguish a heat difference from 600mhz. That being said, I will not clock beyond 800mhz. Happy with the current speed, so no need to gamble further. |
