delete the png in a terminal as root, it might install...
I had a similar problem with another deb I was creating.

I have successfully flashed my N800 about 20 times from Windows XP.

try downloading another one of the myriad of cd live linux variations. odd the usb icon goes away. you checked the usb cord?

I tried, but it didn't help. However uninstalling the "gizmo-installer" package with:

Code:

dpkg -r gizmo-installer
Did let me install Gizmo from their repo via App Manager :D

GPE does work on OS2008, but you need to use the experimental dist at:

http://www.cobb.uk.net/apt/

(add "deb http://www.cobb.uk.net/apt/ chinook experimental" to your
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/hildon-application-manager.list )

'try downloading another one of the myriad of cd live linux variations. odd the usb icon goes away. you checked the usb cord'

When trying it 30 times, I did check the usb cord, yes.I also tried a different usb port. I am out of town and only have one computer to try it on.I will try another usb cord when I find one.

I have seen similar behavior before, just not as bad. It is NOT odd that the usb icon goes away. This is how this process fails, when it fails.I have described this problem before, on this site. (see 'flashing is too hard') I am not the only one who has described this problem.

As a devotee of Distrowatch, I am well aware that there are other cd live variations. I will try some. Hopefully one will work, though Ubuntu is a fairly major distro.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Thanks for posting this evanjfraser, that is brilliant news - just what I have been looking for.

GPE Contacts, ToDo and File Manager all install and work.

The problem with Calendar is that it requires the missing package libsoup2.2-8. From what I can see this should be in the Cobb repository.
It is listed in http://www.cobb.uk.net/apt/dists/chi...armel/Packages

but the file is not present.

Would you have any idea how to obtain it?

On Wednesday & Thursday, I used CNet instruction to install but it wasn't successful (timeout error after last command). However yesterday, I downloaded the firmware & flasher-3.0 again and gave it another try. I flashed my N800 without enable R&D mode and it was a success. I don't know if the firmware or the R&D mode caused the problem.

You need the Maemo Hackers repository I believe:

Re: How to put OS2008 on N800.... now!

norsk, I had the same problem with the boot loop. This post is also pertinent to those trying to install from Ubuntu live cd.

Turns out that the live CD method does not work sometimes. For unknown reasons, the virtual filesystem that it creates has no free space for the os2008 files to expand into during installation. This results in only a partial flash.

Check your logs for write errors or disk space errors.

My solution was to install Ubuntu to a partition. The process was then seamless. And I'm a big fan of Ubuntu now, too. ;)
