Click the 'help' function in MM. I did that when I wanted to figure out how to download maps in advance. That was in 1.4, I don't know if it changed in 2.x.. but IIRC I just had to click a couple of places in the display and it downloaded everything in between or some such.

Yep, you need to center two area corners and then go to Area tab of Maps setup. I tried to download maps for an area between NYC and Boston with Zoom level 0 and it gave me estimation of gazillion Mb's :) I don't think my SD will approve it. Honestly, I think its a glitch. But I've got an idea. Any thoughts on how much space would take detailed map for CT, NYC and MA?

By your description, I think your belief is correct that "it's a bug in how GPS data is transmitted to the applications." It sounds like the GPSD server (which is responsible for collecting data from the receiver and distributing it to registered listeners) is having trouble getting the data from your receiver.

Older version of Maemo Mapper (prior to v2.1) allowed you to interface directly with a bluetooth receiver (bypassing GPSD), because GPSD was not common to the 770 and N800. The problem with this is that only one application can directly access a bluetooth receiver at once.

Since v2.1, Maemo Mapper uses the new libgpsmgr framework, which uses GPSD exclusively, allowing other applications (like the built-in map application) to share the GPS data with Maemo Mapper.

Try using Maemo Mapper v2.0.5 and making sure that the "gpsd" program is not running in the background. (You can use "ps | grep gpsd" from the command line to check if it's running.) I think you have to disable all the GPS stuff in OS2008's control panel in order for gpsd to be disabled.

Now for a completely different question... I have only seen reference to it in the "Plans for Maemo Mapper v2.0" thread.

Is there a utility to "convert" a file system cache from the old version to the new database cache format? Or, is there a program like WinMapper available that will build the new DB file?

I've got it done already. The new tool will convert the old mm1.x map files into mm2.x file gdbm database on Windows PC. The technique hurdle has been solved in the past a few days. But hey, I need some time to clean up the Windows gdbm routine, it's a mess due to MS C run time problem.

Also I am developing a utility which will extract map tiles from MS IE cache and convert them into mm1.x map tile file structure. Combined with winmapper, you will have the area downloading and browsing downloading capability on PC.

I will release the 2 utilities soon, so keep your mm1.x map files, don't erase them.

Thanks nutter. I will be looking forward to your utils eagerly. I updated mapper to 2.2 but then backed out to 1.4.2 because my maps stopped working.

I may be able to spin out a perl util if I can read the format of GDBM required for maemo mapper.

Am I correct that zoom levels should be one step up/down from the previous one?

Not sure what is going on, but it seems that every other zoom level is LARGE and FUZZY. Could this have to do with double pixel or something else?

Also, anyone figure out how to get the display to show track up or does it only do north up?

Also wondering if I have maps left over from map/wayfinder/whatever it was that might be causing this disparity in step size and fuzziness? Perhaps I should just delete everything to do do with maps and start over?

Thanks for the reply, I believe that version is one of the ones I tried after re-flashing to OS2007 and still got the "invalid NMEA data". The only way I could get older versions installed was to install the latest version and install the older version over it. Otherwise it wouldn't install because some file was missing.

At this point, I think I'll wait to see if we get an update to OS2008 or to try a different BT GPS receiver.

Tweak the "Download Steps" setting in the "Manage Repositories" dialog. That variable determines which zoom levels are actually downloaded automatically. This can save disk space. ("View Steps" determines which zoom levels to actually display. If "View Steps" is less than "Download Steps", then for some zoom levels, you will see pixelated versions of higher zoom levels.)

Alternatively, you can download the maps manually using the "Manage Maps" dialog. Manually downloaded maps are not subject to the "Download Steps" variable.

The concept is called "Auto-Rotate" in Maemo Mapper and is enabled via the "View | Rotate | Auto-Rotate" menu item. It only works when "Auto-Center" is enabled. Otherwise, you can always rotate the view manually.

Maemo Mapper cannot read the proprietary map format of Maps/Wayfinder, so that isn't the problem.

OK, this makes sense now. I had used up 2.1G with the map app that came with this n800, now dumped. Now maps dumped too :).

Might take a while but perhaps just define North American box and let it download until the cows come home to make sure I get everything.

Guess it might be wiser though to just turn on all the zoom levels and go to the areas I specifically want as a start :).

Ah, thanks. Problem is, I think, trying to futz with the device while driving (scary with any device:-). Every time I turn on auto center and touch the screen it goes away - gets exciting :-).
